Where can you get DNA testing done in Cork? I thought somewhere in town did it, but someone else has mentioned Ballincollig, out by the White Horse. Anybody got any info?

    As in paternity test?

    I found this on google
    http://www.blackrock-clinic.ie/asp/news_item.asp?version=lowend&newsID=35
    €435 per person.

More info from the Blackrock clinic here

I could have sworn I saw Cork in the article! All this not drinking and stopping smoking must be slowly killing my brain :( sorry about that.

Try phoning the Blackrock clinic tomorrow and ask them of any affiliates maybe?

You did, but it was just a quote from a legal avademic in UCC.

Good stuff, I'll have a shot off that.

A friend of mine is chair of adopteped persons association of Ireland
    http://www.adoptionireland.com

I've asked him and he is making enquiries, so I'll be back on as soon as I hear back from him, either on list of by PM (the latter if it's a private doctor)

    Thank you hedgetrimmer. No rush.

    no worries, dahamsta.

Here is my friend's reply...sorry i couldn't be of more help

Best link I could get you is this:
    http://www.life.ie/TreoirBooklet/paternity.htm

Checked with Treoir (the Federation of Services for Unmarried Parents & their Children) who gave me these contacts:

    Blackrock Clinic 2832222 ext 3215
Parentage Testing Services 15 hollypark avenue, blackrock, co dublin 2894342

    cellmark diagnostics 0044 1235528000
are UK based. You can nominate a GP who they'll send the testing kit too. S/he takes the samples and sends them back to the UK.

Treoir had no current prices but reckoned on about EUR900 give or take. And nothing available in Cork at all...

I appreciate the effort hedgetrimmer. You might want to let your friend know that there's definitely somewhere in Ballincollig anyway, since the person that told me has already been there and had a test. Perhaps it was a GP that does kit testing though. I'll post here if I find out more. (I was almost certain that somewhere in the City did it, but it looks like I was wrong.)

Just in case anyone is looking for this information in future...

As far as I'm aware, no matter where you get tested in Ireland or the UK your samples will end up being tested in Cellmark Diagnostics anyway, so having scoped out pricing a little I decided to go direct. They charged me just over €700, and the doctor charged me another €50 for sampling. Another doctor I priced wanted to charge me €135 for sampling, and a professor in NUI Galway wanted to hit me up for a grand total of €900 for the lot. So shop around kids.

The process was pretty simple, I just applied for an information pack on the Cellmark site, and received it in a few days. That contains info on the process, the costs, details on legal processes if applicable, and a list of GP's who have explictly agreed to do sampling. You can choose your own GP or nominate another if you wish, as long as they agree to do the sampling. Then you send off your hard-earned cash and they send a sampling kit to the doc.

When the doc gets the sampling kit, you just need to pop down with the Evil Moneygrabbing B1tch Ex-Girlfriend (I'm not bitter*) and the kiddywinky in question with two passport photos each, answer some questions for the forms, try and keep a straight face while the doc sticks a swab into everyone's gob and swooshes it around, and grumble loudly when it comes time to pay the bill. The results will be a minimum of five working days, and will be posted to both you and the aforementioned E.M.B.E.G.

There you have it, simple as that. If you're in Cork, I found the doctor in Carrigaline very helpful, whereas the one in Ballincollig tried to fleece me. I've attached the email from the very helpful Natalie at Treoir for reference. Thanks also to Vivienne at the Irish Family Planning Association for her help. And no, I haven't gotten the results back yet.

    HTH,
    adam

    * I'm actually not. I was being humourous. I do that sometimes.
Thanks for your enquiry. While we don't have a list of GP's who carry
out paternity tests in Cork, we can give you some information on how to
proceed. GP's in Ireland take samples which are then sent off for
testing, normally in the UK. You can either contact the laboratory in
the UK yourself, who will ask you to select a GP to undertake the
tests, or you can go to one of the specialist agencies who will
    organise it for you.

The only information we have on those specialist agencies are as
    follows:

    Blackrock Clinic
    Blackrock, Co. Dublin
    Tel: (01) 283 2222 Extn: 3215

    Parentage Testing Service
15 Holly Park Avenue, Blackrock, Co. Dublin
    Tel: (01) 2894342

    Prof. James A. Houghton
    Cytogenetics, Microbiology Dept., NUI, Galway
    Tel: (091) 750384
Information on this service is also available at
    www.paternityireland.com

The testing organisation, whom you can contact directly if you wish is
called Cellmark Diagnostics. Their contact details are as follows:

    PO Box 265, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 1YK
    Tel: 0044 1235 528000

As I mentioned earlier, they will ask you to nominate a GP to whom the
testing kit can be sent. It can be any GP, you just need to check with
them in advance that they are willing to do it. If you mail me back a
postal address, I can send you a copy of the Cellmark booklet.
