Integrated Router Firewalls ... any good?

I have a USR 8000 broadband router at home ... written all over the manual that came with it, it says it has an integral firewall ... are the firewalls in this type of equipment worth a damn?, or should I just turn it off (I dont know if I can or not with this one) and depend on Zone Alarm Pro or some other software type firewalls? ...

They are usually worth having but a lot harder to maintain in terms of patches etc. Vendors are often reluctant to announce and publish vunerabilities in their products which can leave you high and dry when the latest nasty shows up...

If you can, use multiple lines of defense, watch the logs and keep an eye on bugtraq for mentions of your device/firmware.

We have a Netgear ADSL router in work, which has an integrated firewall, and after having a look through all the options available by the web interface, it seems to be extremely poor configuration-wise, allowing only site blocking (by keyword!), no port or ip range blocking, all it logs is outbound port 80 traffic, etc.

I'm pretty doubtful of its abilities to hold up any intrusion attempt, so I'll be putting in a debian machine w/ iptables pretty quickly as a secondary (although I'd view it as a primary) defense behind the router... for both proper internet/web access monitoring and a firewall I can have full control over and monitor.
