I really need some help here people. I am not sure if I have posted this in the right thread and if I did post it in the wrong place please feel free to re-direct me / it to the proper one. I bought my wife a new Mobile, Pay As You Go Phone for x-mas. It is an 02 phone and her number begins with 086. I have been using 086 for years and I have never had any problems. But ever since she charged up her phone and turned it on, there is this one person that keeps sending her obscene texts and messages. I have taken the matter up with 02 but they said I need to report it to the Gardai and then they (02) will change her phone number. Personally I feel that this is totally unacceptable. I feel that we ( 02 ) users should be allowed to use their service without any hassle. Also I feel that we should be allowed to BLOCK any numbers that are sending just offensive texts etc. I have the persons Mobile 086 number that is causing all the hassle to my wife and I have sent several messages ermm Etc. asking them to stop. But this guy just wont stop. I know that ESAT / EIRCON etc etc etc know who is doing it and that they can tell you who it is from their number. But they wont give out that information to an ordinary user. I know it's a HE and I know the general area he is from but if anyone knows how I can obtain his name and address from his number PLEASE! PM me in the strictest confidence and / or tell me how to go about getting it. This really has gone beyond a joke now.

As far as I'm aware, it is within the rights of the Gardaí to have a reverse lookup done (i.e.: get o2 to tell them the name and address of the user with a particular number) if a crime has been committed.

As harrassment is a crime, if you're serious about pursuing the matter further, I'd suggest going to the Gardaí.

Your only option is to go to the guards. They should sort it very quickly though. Whats your problem with that?

Well, if you want to meet the bloke, call him from a landline no.

Tell him he's won a holiday, or something like that, and tell him u need his details to send the prize to himk.

Obviously youll need a different phone no, and a convincing cover story.

I wonder if posting the number here might help? Hmm maybe not, better not do that - put his number out into the internet... nah bad idea.

Anyway, I think I should move this somewhere else... umm not sure, maybe I'll take a random board and we'll just see where it goes eh.

As for your problem, the Gardai are the only way mate. You'll never get anything off those corporates but you will deffo get help from the Gards, there has even been a thread somewhere on boards re. the same matter. I'll try and find it.

    Bombidol had a thread here

Yep, it should be in O2's terms and conditions, even for Speakeasy phone, along the lines of "Abuse of this service may result in a ban from using the service on the O2 network", when talking about SMS.

I know Vodafone do a reverse lookup, furnish the info to the Gardai, who usually issue a warning. If it continues, Vodafone remove that person's SMS ability, and the Gardai are notified again.
If the person hasn't registered their name, Vodafone will usually suspend the phone so it can't be used at all.

I would assume O2 would have the same policy on nuisance users. Changing your number? Well, that's just giving in to the ****.

I used to get these for weeks from a particular number. In the end I just stopped replying to the messages and ignored them completely, he eventually saw I wasn't bothered and stopped wasting his money.

How did this person get her mobile number ???????

The Best thing is to ignor it and get onto the garda they can track the number to the last arieal or beacon it when through but if the the physco is not registered there is not much you can do

Except for try and trick him into giving his details

You could post it up here and see if anyone reckonises the number.

If all else fails get a new sim

my gf had the same problom a while back ( 087 tho )

she rang voda and they said they would take care of it and if the calls persisted that she was to ring back

somthn about in there contract they can cut you for abuse and the likes

also this happened to another friend of mine who just went to the garda and showed the phone to them they then kept a log of all calls/txt's and took care of it from there

easiest way to handle it tho is pay 20 quid and get a new number

on another note putting his number in some places in the net could prove intresting

One possible way to get a name is (that if the person has set up there message greeting)

insert a 5 before there number after the 08X bit this will go straight into there anwsering service.
    i.e. 086 5XXXXXXX

Some people include there name with in the greeting

That's what I'd do - waste their money! Keep them on for as long as possible if they were phoning and keep the texts flowing in.

No way would I get a new number because of some wee fecker.

Ah go on post up the number! I can call people and they will never see my number, I can call them and find out their name if you like.

If you want to ring him from your own landline dial 141 before his number, your ID will be withheld

Thanks for all the advice guys. However after 20 really distasteful texts in the space of 1 hour I have given the number to the Gardai and shown them all the text messages. I also rang O2 again and they said they would change her number. She has not agreed to this yet. But if she does and the same thing happens again I will be giving some of the suggestions made here a great deal of thought. Once again thank you all for your help.

Contact 02 it's in their TOC as far as i remember, their main building is on baggot street somewhere IIRC, go there, and complain in person, if they do squat, goto the guards, and press haressment charges if possible.

Just a little update. Since I gave his number and all his texts to the Gardai so far he has not text her at all. I dont know what they did but it seems to have worked for now anyway. The Gardai actually advoised me not to post his number on the www and thats why I have not done it so far. But all it will take is 1 more text from him and I will post his number in places even he would be frightned of. Once again thanks to everyone for their support. One thing I really would love to see on our phones though, is the ability to actually BLOCK an offensive number. It would save an awfull lot of hassle. I mean it's not that hard to set up and would not cost too much? Any ideas on how we could make this happen?

DO NOT EVER POST MOBILE OR LAND LINE NUMBERS HERE UNLESS THEY ARE YOURS.

No offense to anyone but this isnt kosher. How did he get her number? Why is he so persistent (20 an hour sounds like someone who has something against her).

Also, we only have OHP's word for this and unfortunately OHP could be telling us a bunch of fibs for all we know.

You should all be a little more careful about mobbing up with pitchforks and torches for anyones cause no matter how noble it may seem.

No offence OHP and thanks for not posting the number here etc.
