firewall latency

    Hi guys,
I was using a debian 3.0 box, 2.4.18, with iptables as my home firewall and NAT box. It's a p2-450 with 128mb ram. And it spends it's entire time 99%cpu idle. But just having iptables on add's 10-12 ms to ping.

Also, even worse. Randomly (about 1/10 packets) the connect will spike. Horribly. From 10ms to 40, 70 or even 200!

I've watched machine load and the processes and they seem well behaved. I dont know whats causing the problem. This has occured with a ne2000 pci 10mbit, and two RTL8139 (b and c) 100mbit cards. In fact, if anything I think it was worse with the RTL's.

I use a RTL8139 in my desktop, and if I connect that up in windows it gives me beautiful stable pings. If I boot it into linux, it's as spikey as the damn server. (It's also debian 3.0).

So I'm suspicious of my network cards linux driver.

Anyone seen similar problems and solved them? Anyone got the afforementioned cards working at brilliant latencies in linux? The cards all seemed great, I've used them for years, until latency became an issue :(

    Greg
