PC Budget Game Recommend-o-thread

I'm incredibly bored with the current crop of PC games and would like something to tide me over until something worth playing comes out.

Recommend some PC games available on budget, or fairly cheap, that are still entertaining today. I'm open to anything, but preferably something a bit different. I don't want to play yet another generic first person shooter.

Also, any good RPGs for a beginner? Baldur's Gate and Fallout are apparently good, right?

Playing the original Baldurs Gate myself now. Pretty good. Worth a look though as a 1st person RPG is Anachronox, recently released on budget. Great game. Better again though, with the same engine from the same developer is Planescape Torment.

Another good RPG is Deus Ex. If you don't already have it, that one should be your first port of call.

On the sold out label, Z Steel Soldiers is a decent RTS type game, as is Homeworld (space RTS). Starlancer (Xplosiv label), is another good space game out on budget.

If adventure games are your thing, I like Grim fandango and Escape from Monkey Island.

For a non-Genric 1st Person game, try out thief 2 on Sold Out.

Anything on Sold out range is good imo.

    FAKK2
    ONI
    Spec Ops
    Dues Ex
    Progect IGI

And the other range of €7 games Smyths have the best collection of them.

i done the same last week, i managed to pick up -

    1) Escape From Monkey Island - €20 (had played it on ps2 but missed out huge gaps due to only ever playing it in a friends house)

    2) Severance: Blade Of Darkness - €7 - When i had it a couple of years back my old spec pc couldnt run it very well but it always took my fancy, so when i seen it i picked it up again now i have much stronger pc :)

    3) Age Of Empires €10 (?) - keeps you entertained i suppose if you like strategy games

trying to remember what else i seen on the bargain shelfs last week when i was at game, nothing springing to mind though, if i do remember will pop it up :)

Unfortunately like all raven games jedi knight 2 is a bit crap.

Grim fandango had me pissing myself laughing.

I can vouch for Homeworld too. Once you get stuck into it it's absolutely brilliant, maybe one of the best games I've played. Graphics are sweet and you don't need a beast of a machine to play it either.

It gets my seal of approval!

If you're a fan of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (I'm not ... really...), it's going in HMV (well, in Swords at least...) on budget and on sale for only €3.99 ... as are a bunch of other games...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Starcraft and Dues Ex would be two of my main recommendations.

    Defo check out
    Homeworld
    Alien Vs Predator
    Fallout
    Fallout 2

I still play fallout 2 to this day:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭Squall

If youre looking for fallout then you might have a look around for the fallout radioactive box( Fallout, Fallout 2 and tactics in one)Think i picked it up for €25 in Game in Cork.

Got independance war 2 edge of chaos a few days ago for €13. Fairly good game, involving storyline, graphics arent bad and its long so good for killing time (Its a space flight sim btw).

Homeworlds and Deus ex both definately worth a look

If your lucky (which i never was) you might find the starcraft and broodwar boxed set thingy somewhere

been playing the first warcraft quite a lot recently so i'm gonna see if i can find warcraft 2 going cheap today... or maybe succumb to the temptation of finally buying dues ex.
Bleh DIABLO 2 probably , dungeion siege .

    Your a sap :P

Get back to studying. JK 2 is class. Retro doesnt like it cause it's not final fantasy...it isnt rated in Japan...and it doesnt have anything to do with Japan.

When you were playing it "this is fu<k1ng great"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

prolly get old championship manager games for about a fiver...

rg prolly only played the first couple of levels, it sucks pretty bad up to the point where you get the lightsaber.
imho it's the best quake 3 ta engine game out there.

g_saberrealisticcombat 1 and set sabercolor orange improve the game massively

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,446 ✭✭✭✭amp

Saw Sim City 3000 uk edition in Tesco's for 17 yoyo's on a budget label. Didn't buy it cos I presumed Smyths would have it for cheaperness.

It's not, and dont waste your time on it either, it's complete **** of the worst kind.
If you want a good RPG, get Gothic.

    Baldur's Gate
    Deus Ex
    Vampire: The Masquerade
    Planescape: Torment
    Starcraft
    Diablo2
    Gothic

All brilliant, fanastic games, if you can get them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

From following the metal board, I am not surprised that ANgelwhore recomends a title called Gothic. However, I do have this game and like it. Little bit like an action version of morrowind, but far more linear.

I got it for 4.99 stg in Game, Newry. They also had it in one of the game stores in Dublin (can't remember which) for about 8 Euro shortly after christmas.

Have to say though, I did like Dungeon Siege, although it was definitely more Diablo than Baldurs gate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,225 ✭✭✭Scruff

Game have a buy 2 get a 3rd free offer on the Sold Out budget range at the moment.
Got TOCA2, Commandos- Behind Enemy Lines and Might and Magic VII for €16.

one question though, is M&M VII any good? haven't installed it yet, read 2 reviews that said it was but the graphics are poo. which is annoying cause on the back of the box they look great, must be cut scenes or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

    hmv have x-plane for €4.

now in my books the most realistic commercial flight sim with the whole earths scenery and about 30000 airports for less than the price of a pint is bloody good value.

another one i seen is ballistics a wipeout/extreme g rip of which is supposedely very very good is also being unloaded by them for €4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Got them both. Ballistics is very good fun at that price. Fastest game I ever saw.

X-Plane is a flight sim freaks wet dream. Highly recomended.

you might also recommend a place to buy falcon 4, seems to be selling for 30 stg on ebay and 55 on amazon!!!

    :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

You can get falcon with B17 and gunship in a budget deal at the moment. I've seen it in a few places. But be warned you will need to print the manual and get the SP3 patches which are very big. Very complex game/sim.

Glad im not the only one who hated it. Deinately get both the Baldurs Gate games, they'l keep you occupied for 3months at least each, and then the expansion packs have a load of new stuff in them, probably my fave RPG ever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

got warcraft 2 the other day, nearly finished all the standard levels, i'll be moving onto the expansion pack levels soon...

if you like rts' then i'd defo reccomend this, decent lifespan & some of the multiplayer maps are class (only played against the comp so far tho)
It's not, and dont waste your time on it either, it's complete **** of the worst kind.
If you want a good RPG, get Gothic.
i've never really been into rpg's, diablo is the only one i own & i love that game. i found the demo of dungeon siege fairly entertaining, it's basicly diablo with nice 3d graphics & more outdoor environments
