Heading to the 'Dam next Friday, for a long weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to see or do there for a first time visitor?

The Markets, The markets, The markets...

Amsterdam has a rich trading past and you can find the most amazing things from all corners of teh earth in their open air markets...Cloths that are fantastic. I buy all my cloths in these Markets. They are dirt cheap too :)

The usual. Red Light District(don't take photos - its illegal). The Van Gooh Museum. Go to some Sex shows. Visit a coffe shop(when your leaving or else you'll see nothing).

If i had to recommand a short but EXCELLENT guide book i'd say the "City Guide to Amsterdam by VIRGIN"... IT has everything. Its not really a tourist book. MOre a book to the city. it has all the good shops that u should goto.

Oh... Go to the "Kinder Kook Restraut"... Its a Restraut run by children. They cook the food and serve it.. its kuhl :)

Also spent as much time wondering around the Non-tourist areas of Amsterdam such as "De Pejb" and the "old jewish quater"

I was never in amsterdam in the winter but i heard its amazing with all the canals frozen. Bring a Camera with Black and White film :)

Check out Dampkring - my fav coffeshop.

Stay away from the 3D experience - it's pretty boring

The Supper Club (www.supperclub.nl) highly recommended! Check it out. An excellent nite out :)

Withnail(my mates) and i(me) are contemplating going to either Amsterdam for one week or on one of those zhitty package holidays for two, that is to say ibiza, menoraca etc once we finish our leaving cert to celebrate and gloat on women and drink. So basically which would be cheaper, one week in amsterdam or two in say ibiza? which one would you personally go to if given the opportunity? Bare in mind we'll all be 18 year olds full testosterone

err Caesar.. contrary to your opinion, Amsterdam isn't a binge city, yeah its great to have a joint or two (you won't handle anymore over there) and wander around the citys tourist attractions and sights... but believe me go overboard (as you probably will) and you won't go anymore than 100m from a cafe or your hotel for the week (if you even leave the hotel)... i.e. incredibly boring and a waste of money, and you'll have as much chance of pulling as a paraplegic in a convent :)
