    Hi all

    Just wondering about the following

I am due to fly to Amsterdam next week, however I dont have a passport. I know it takes, normally, 10 days to get issued with, but I was told that if I present all documentation, and proof of my intention to fly, I can get this rushed through - is this true or just crap?

Generally yes, phone the passport office though. It would help if you were going to Amsterdam for a work / study reason as opposed to recreational purposes. Sometimes they can turn them around in 2-3 days. Make sure you have the information perfect and complete. And be nice to them.

Only during the summer. Last time I was in it took 5 minutes to get to the counter and 2 days to get my (second) passport.

Yes, you can get your password in two days and if you really in a hurry, you can get it in the same day. as Victor said , make sure all the docs are filled currectly and be nice. ;) I done that once and all they wanted was the flight tickets or proof of tickets from the agency. I wasn't asked anything about the intentions of travel. I applied in early in the morning and got it the same evening before the office closed. I guess it can depend on how busy the office is but there shouldn't be any problems.
    All the best :)

Don't mean to be pissy.. BUt why in the hell didn't u have one...
There is no telling what will happen tomorrow. WHo knows. Maybe u would have to flee the country because FF will finally declare a Dictatorship and inforce Martical Law purging every Computer nerd in the country... Thats my excuse for always having my passport upto date...

[more seriously note] Technically you don't need a passport to travel within the EU. All you need is proof of residence and that u are an EU citzen[/more serious note]

Having spent many years working at the airport I've lost count of the number of people who believe this to be true and ended up missing some of their holiday/business trip.

Technically you don't need a passport to travel *within* the EU *excluding* the UK and Ireland. In other words you can bugger round all you want between France, Germany, Spain etc but travel to/from the UK or Ireland and other EU countries absolutely requires a passport.

Ireland and the UK was excluded from the Schengen (sp?) area since we already had a free travel agreement from the old Anglo-Irish treaty. It was deemed too complex at the time to include us without screwing the prior agreement so the status que was left in place with a view to looking at it again in the future.

So purlease don't show up at the airport without your passport if you intend going anywhere except domestic or UK! ) (and complaining bout 'free travel' within the EU won't bloody help ;) )

Just to add to that one...
Even if I'm flying from here to the UK, I always bring a passport. I've lost count of the number of people I've seen refused entry because they didnt bring it. I've had it happen to friends, and people I was *supposed* to be travelling with as well.

It's almost always checked as you run through check in...they have to verify that the name on the passport and ticket match, to stop people sneeking around places they shouldnt be.

And birth cert, driving licence, letter from mother etc will not cut it.

After Sept 11 especially, all airports are really strict on this stuff.

Unless you coming back into Cork. You could wave a beermat at the passport check and get through lol
