FTV and Freeview

I was interested to read about the new Freeview service in the UK. Up to 30 TV channels available. All that is required is a one-off equipment cost for a digital adapter that allows your existing television to receive the digital signals. Cost is only 99 quid. No subscription fees.

Some of the channels available on the Freeview service are *not* available with an FTV card. These include ITV 2, UK History and Sky Sports News.

Anyone know why this is the case? Is there any possibility that these will ever be available with an FTV card??

As part of the deal when ITV went on Sky digital last year, they were charged millions for conditional access epg carriage.
In a bit of revenge, ITV charged Sky for carrying ITV 2, so as a result it had to be on a minimum package and not FTV.

Freeview is digital terrestrial ie received on a uhf channel via a stb connected to a uhf aerial.
ITV2 is carried there free as there is no charge made to ITV for it's carriage as technically(but not actually) it is supposed only to be viewable in the UK for rights purposes.
Free view is not an encrypted service.

    Very interesting.

    What precisely does this mean?

Is it possible to get Freeview in the Republic?

He means ITV2 is not available down here, but by some quirk, ITV2 is viewable on non-Sky digiboxes.

I know of people **in the right places** in Donegal who can get Freeview. Remember Freeview doesnt have the same coverage as normal analogue terrestrial TV has.
