Putty defaults to SSH. Have you changed it to telnet?

    Zab.

actually it always defaulted to telnet for me,

but no unfortunately that wasn't the problem

    strange isn't it?

    Are you behind a firewall/router/proxy?
I assume when windows is configured to use a proxy for all it's comms that the dos telnet command uses it automatically too, whereas PuTTY might require some extra guidance.
That's about the only thing I can think of this early in the morning.

I downloaded the 0.53b release direct from the sitr and it still defaults to telnet.

    Ye shouldn't be using telnet

Indeed, passwords sent over plain text are never a good idea. (Although, the person running the telnetd is really to balme ;) )

SSH is there for a reason.

In Putty, under the SSH tab, you will find protocol options.
Putty defaults to Protocol 1, but since a security update, some of our servers only accept SSH connections over protocol 2.

    Just a possibilty....
