Despite promises (threats?) to have the 'Spike' in O'Connell Street ready for Christmas, alas this will not be so.
First section of 'Spike' inches towards Dublin
    From: Ireland.com
    Tuesday, 17th December, 2002

The first section of the O'Connell Street Spike has completed most of its journey towards Dublin city centre and work will begin on erecting the monument tomorrow morning.

The six sections of the Spire were built at Radley Engineering in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

The first section - 20.1 metres long - is now in Baldonnell, Co Dublin and will remain there till 10.30 p.m. before finishing its journey to the city centre tonight to avoid traffic disruption.

Work on erecting the 120-metre high construction will begin at first light tomorrow.

The project is expected to be finished early in the New Year.

Hopefully it wont go up at all.Honestly what a load of sh1te it is.Despite the fact nobody wants it the corpo cuts down the trees and restricts the driving just so they can stick up a large steel phallus in the middle of the citys main street.
God I love this country-it cant afford to keep hospital maternity wards open and can let babies die by the roadside because of this but we can still afford to spend millions putting up a huge meaningless steel"millenium"monument(the irony being that we are close on 3 years into the millenium). We had the advantage to see from the sidelines what a load of balls the millenium dome was-but no we just go and build a similiar monument of mans contempt for the taxpayer..Well done Bertie!

Any1 else think it will be taken down in a few years? After spending all the cash on it they will probably realise it isnt wind proof:rolleyes:

No, actually, - I think it'll probably be up for some time... until someone blows it up of course...
By the way,how much is the fish!

Again , I hope it does. I think it's a good idea - something different. TBH no matter what could have been put up, there would be complaints - you can't win in this country.

I woulda liked if it was built a bit different and they put a lift in and some glass to look out of, I dont see how it's gonna be anyway good the way its been made tho.

Humph, am I the only person who thinks that it's a good idea? Well not so much a good idea in a manner of speaking, but the whole idea of the giant needle. I think it'll look pretty good tbh.

I've never seen a shiny, silver coloured 120 meter phallus with a light at the tip.

Have I led a very sheltered life?

I dunno what all the complainin' is for... Theres plenty of annoying pricks in Dublin already, I'm sure nobody will really notice the arrival of another one - even if it is 120m high and made out of metal.

The thought sickens me, there are people waiting years to go to for life saving operations, people living on the streets and the government decide to spend a couple of million on a steel spike that will need to be cleaned every week therefore costing us more money. Personnally i think that if the money this is costing was spent on helping at least one person live a healthy life then i for one would be willing to pay my taxes in good faith

    Dungarvan...I see, I see indeed.

Anyway, why not 'belt' up and get the thing 'stuck' in the middle of our main street? Dublin Corporation have to spend money somehow, it might as well be this, sure the cash could have been spent on something worthwhile, but this, well, it is a bit representitive of the city and those of us who live here.

    Thumbs Up from me.

    Luc

(p.s. I bet this is gonna be one of those things everyone likes when they see it erected. Oh and the spike will be nice too).

I'm just trying to imagine in my mind's eye just how tall this thing's going to be... The first section (now installed) is 20m tall - that's as tall as the G.P.O. There are FIVE MORE sections of the same height to be added to the top, with the next one currently on it's way to Dublin, apparently.

It's just hard to picture a monument standing in the middle of O'Connell Street that is six times taller than the G.P.O. ... but in a few weeks time, we won't need to imagine as it'll be a reality. One thing's for sure, - it'll be quite a sight!

    is this :

    A) excellent target practice for wannebee Terrorists?
    B) dangerous and spectacular as it will fall down with heavy wind
    C) Be a gift for the 'green' people when this spike will be covered in moss and bird droppings?
    D) will it be a magnet for dumb 'Truth or Dare' projects ?
    C) Will Americans claim it came from outerspace?
    E) is in fact our new Internet connection that works with line of 'sight' ?

    F) fill in blanks...

Probably has the same future as our millenium clock :D

For those who don't recall, IR£250,000 to install a glowing clock under O'Connell bridge in the liffey. "What ya mean the Liffey is 'dirty'?" Another couple of thousand taking it back out again.

I have a little faith left in the corpo and i trust they have forseen this evetuality.

    C) Be a gift for the 'green' people when this spike will be covered in moss and bird droppings?

Fair point, anyone know the answer to this?

    D) will it be a magnet for dumb 'Truth or Dare' projects ?

I hope so, we need more expamples of Darwinsim in this country.

    C) Will Americans claim it came from outerspace?

Probably, but theyre always good for a laugh

    E) is in fact our new Internet connection that works with line of 'sight' ?

spike that will need to be cleaned every week therefore costing us more money

Wrong .... the reason it has taken so long is because a french company went on strike that where treating it so that it dosnt need to be cleaned , something to do with ball bearings (cant remember off the top of my head) which results in dirt and water not being able to stick to it.

I think its a great idea , its unique.

No one liked the Eiffel Tower when it was built.

Such carping! It'll look great in the rising and setting sun, pity it could'nt have been designed to be large enough for a lift so ppl could see the view from the top.

Oh, go to Smithfield! Putting in a lift would have meant it would have cost more (and not just the cost of the lift).

I think it will ruin the skyline of dublin in the city centre..
and it's not like you can go to the top of it.. it just... sits there..
somebody mentioned the eiffel tower there.. at least there is resteraunts and you can climb to the top of it.. and its not an eyesore to look at
    ::bad idea::

I think it was mentioned in the context that Parisians hated it when it first went up - now its a national symbol.

When M. Effiel proposed his tower many were against it, when it was going up more were appalled ("ow hi is this thing going?")
and it was considered ugly. Then when it was opened up opinion changed as the ppl of Paris could see thier own city for the first time, the tower was intended to stand for only 20 years but its height meant it could be used for radio. Now of course if it was knocked down there would be a national day of mourning...

Thats exactly my point! You can see Paris from the top of the eiffel tower.. you can't see Dublin from the top of the 'spike'..
