    Hi,
Can anyone tell me if i can use my O2 Xda as a mobile to roam in the states and in particular in New York?
Can I also use the web there with it, and whats the cost?
When I got it originally the Rep told me that I would eventually, but how?
    Thanks

    Man,
I don't think you'll be able to use the xda in New York. You need a tri-band phone to roam on American GSM networks and my understanding is that the xda's a dual-band phone. A quick call to O2 customer care (1909) should confirm this.

I'd suggest you maybe borrow a tri-band handset for your trip, e.g. Motorola V66, Nokia 6310i, Sony Ericsson T68i.

With regard to web access over a mobile, my understanding is that you can only roam on GPRS on other O2 networks at present. O2 are looking at introducing GPRS roaming in America, but I don't think they have it up and running yet. It means you're confined to really slow (9.6Kbps) and expensive dial-up connections.

Yep. It's definitely dual band. See here http://www.mmo2.com/docs/services/xda_how2.html

No it'll not work as a phone, but the PDA aspect will be OK. Strangely, the XDA is for sale in the USA, but on the T-Mobile networl. Closer inspection revealed it wasn't a GSM triple band, but a CDMA (US only) version. It's being sold for $299 with a contract.

you can get the Pocket PC Phone edition (what we call the XDA) with T-Mobile and AT&T in the US for their 1900 GSM/GPRS network

there was talk of HTC the device manufacturers supplying a dual band 900/1900 device that would work on the 1900 US networks and 900 networks here but that never appeared

the Fujitsu Siemens LOOX GSM/GPRS clip-on module was going to enable it to be the first 900/1800/1900 tri-band Pocket PC Phone but the module was cancelled last month
