PC Advice

    Hi,

I recently upgraded my pc with Motherboard, memory and processor.

Asus A7N266-VM Motherboard Socket A DDR
    TwinMOS DDR-DIMM 256MB CL2.5
AMD Athlon XP2000+ 1.66 GHz 266 MHz bus

I am still using my old HardDrive that i reformatted to get a complete new clean machine.

I put the machine together and installed Win200. This installed no problem.
The problem is once i boot up into 2k and do anything the machine reboots. So i cannot do anything with the pc.
The harddrive that i have is about 3 years old and was originally in a Pentium machine.

Is there any way of finding out where the problem lies, Memory, processor, Motherboard, or even the hard drive as it has been out of its old machine for about 6 months.
Or are my components not compatible with each other.
I thought it strange that 2k installed no problem what so ever
but as soon as i run it, i get my problems

    Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    JOn

Are you using the same PSU out of the old system? Try replacing it. it may not work with that system. Also take a look at yout bios settings and make sure the CPU using the right amount of volts and the such, same for the memory

    Cheers Sutty,

I am using a new 300W PSU. SO i dont think this is the problem.

I will check that for the CPU and the momory but i think it is ok.

    Thanks

You'd be surprised what might happen because a processor or ram isn't fully pushed in...

Yea, I have tried all that, and still nothing.

What is really confusing me is that it installs 2k no problems whatsoever. The problems only start when i run 2k.

    COmpletely confused.

are you getting blue screen of death - or just rebooting??

would it be possibly to get a loan of a hd with an os on it and try that?/

or try installing another os, to see if it is compatable

I got the blue screen of death a few times and then took apart the machine and build it again and i have not had the Blue screen since.

I tried a few other HD's and the same thing happened when I installed 2k.

I will try a different OS tonight.
Is it possible that the OS is incompatible with the new hardware??

    Cheers

Win2k should be fine with new hardware.. might have a problem with some older hardware though..

    well I had a old gateway p3 450Mhz
I recently built a new one amd xp 2000+

but my cpu worked for 1 week then it blew it sent it back

while I was waiting on my cpu to come back
I put teh HD in my gateway
I had the exact same problem .. could install it but couldn't run
teh HD work fine if I used it as a slave to win '98 os

Nope, win2k will work with any setup as long as you have the right drivers for it. Hmmm...... what make PSU is it? mice as well do a search and see if the Mother board and PSU work together.

Something that just sprung to mind. make sure you have they fan for the heatsink on the CPU on the right power connecter as alot of systems will shut down if its not.

Not sure what make PSU it is off hand but i will do a search to see if they are compatible later on when i get home and get the make of it.

In relation to the Heatsink being in the wrong socket, i think it is correct as i followed the MoBo's instructions and in the setup the heatsink speed is about 32, 000 rpm and the Processor temp is 40 C.

    Thanks

    32,000 RPM?!?!?!?

I think that may be the problem. is it a fan with a changeable RPM controle? if so it may be set to low. as 32,000 RPM is to fast. Delta fans only run at 6,200rpm or so.

    Hussey,

That sounds exactly like what is happening to me, Did you manage to fix it or what did you do to get over it??

    Fan speed,
Actually maybe it is 3,200 RPM, i will check this also.

    Cheers

Hopefully with some of the advice i wil lbe able to get something working over the weekend.

I wil let you know how i get on.

    Thanks
    JON
