EU Closes Leased Line Probe Due To Price Falls

BRUSSELS -(Dow Jones)- The European Union Commission Wednesday closed its investigation into leased telephone lines following a dramatic fall in prices.
The Commission launched the probe in July 1999, saying prices were high and couldn't be justified by costs. The high prices were slowing the spread of Internet and e-commerce in Europe, it said.

Since then, the price of the most common leased lines fell by an average of 30-40%, it said.

The commission said it was pressure from its inquiry in that helped bring about the dramatic drop in prices.
