Giving up cigarettes?

Now that cigarettes are gone up (again) by 50 cents in the budget (making an average pack of 20 cigarettes - say Marlboro Lights - €5.76), are any of you smokers going to give them up?

I haven't had a cigarette since Budget Day... €5.76 just looks like too much to pay for the pleasure.

Ach, let's make it a poll.

Do you smoke? Will you be giving them up now that they're gone up by 50c a pack? 23 votes

Yes I'm a smoker and No I won't be giving them up.

i "plan" to give them up in the new year. don't really want to before christmas as there's too much drinking to be done and a weak willed fool like myself would buckle.
January is a good time (famous last words) seeing i will more than likely be stoney broke and won't be able to afford to go to the pub too much.

I plan to give them up. Made a serious bash at it before, off them for 2 months. I can only do it when I wake up and decided there and then. I'll throw the smokes away and try not to think about them.

anyone ever try that book that is supposed to put you off smokes while reading it?

Have to agree!! I do it every year but took it serious last year and I did it for three weeks... until something unfortunate happened... I haven't committed since but I like the 'new year, new start' ideal so I'm doing it this time... I find water and fruit is the way to go... Have an apple instead of a ciggy... Go to bed early and all that...

If you use a patch (whether it's a mental or physical thing) train yourself to use it at night and generally thats 8 hours you can do without them... then four either side of your sleep to deal with your craving...

Something I've been doing for a little while on other vB boards...

A mate of mine claimed he felt he had to give up chewing gum after the smokes... I'd honestly feel better without the damn coffin nails...

A smoker who has no intention of giving them up.

I think the book is called Allan Carr's Easy way to be a lousy quitter. I haven't read it I'm afraid it might work.

Smokers could use the satisfaction of annoying the Government/Cha McCreevy as another motivation to give up.

Every time a smoker gives up he gets more and more annoyed as his easy money drys up. Theres not many things you cah throw that much extra tax on without annoying the public ;)

I quite years ago and frankly I have no sympathy for smokers or people who are attempting to give up.

Do or don't, but stop agonising about it.

I havent smoked in about a month. I got some of that Zyban drug on the advice of my doctor. It really works, I'd guess it cuts the craving by 80 - 90%. I tried lots of times before but the cravings never went away, even after a few weeks.

You probably heard about people dying because they took them. But seeing that people who smoke are inclined to drop dead at any moment I wouldn't let it bother you. I did get some side effects: nausea, cold-sweats, itchy skin and a weird taste in my mouth (but this could have been from not smoking ?). But compared to the side effect of smoking; cancer, heart-deease etc etc its nothing really.

    have a look..

I used the book, and quit after finishing it

It worked for me, it might work for anyone....

And before anyone wonders, i was extremely skeptical before reading it. I really did not believe it would help. But i gave up, without patches, or gum, or any other replacement addiction. About 2 months after i gave up i smoked 3 cigarettes, but didnt become rehooked, although i'd say it would be easy enough to do... At that point i think i just needed reminding of how foul the nasty things are... I've been a non smoker now for 5 months and counting...

Personally, i'd say if you do wanna give up, give the book a try, you've nothing to lose.

thats also my intentions, seems a good idea to me anyway.

lol? i see you obviously smoked for all of what, 3 mins while in high school?

im a smoker and ive gave up before and i personally know what it feels like having to give up a heavy smoking habit, and its pretty damn hard, if you were a smoker like you "claim to be" then you would understand that... obviously you dont so i take it you werent... that or your just trying to be snotty nosed about it because you "successfully" gave up, ive met plenty of people who have smoked and gave up and they are the first to admit how hard the "mental addiction" not the "physical addiction" is to get over..

Now stop "swinging that thing" in our faces and grow the fu** up...

Typedef, I could organise for you to meet with my Uncle and preach a few sermons if your interested.

I'm going to be reading that book as soon as I get my hands on it and have set the 14th of January as my day to give up, whether I have the book or not.
