I know it's been discussed a number of times before, but with Christmas coming real soon, I want to buy a present for someone which will allow them to scan their huge selection of 35mm slides..

On Komplett.ie, they have an Epson USB Perfection 1260 Photo 48bit scanner for €160.

Has anybody used this (or a simillar product) for this purpose, and have any idea what the results might be like?

Any info. would be greatly appreciated...
    Many thanks...

The resolution of that scanner is not bad, but the major problem is that it's a flatbed scanner (more suited to prints/documents).
You will need to find out if there is a transparency adapter (basically a light hood) available for that model and factor that into your cost.

Alternatively, you could buy a dedicated film/slide scanner, which is, in my opinion, a much better bet.
    Will cost more though.

I use a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual and it does a far superior job at scanning slides than just about any flatbed.

www.ny-camera.com have the Minolta Scan Dual III for €378 which is a very good price (don't know if you want to spend that much though).

You should pickup a good film scanner for around €200 if you were to consider second-hand.

Hewlett Packard do a good range of negative/slide scanners. I have the HP Scanjet 4470c which comes with a negative/slide adapter.

The quality is fine but best results really some with normal documents, it isn't anything like a professional negative/slide scanner.

It is possible to get specialist scanners, and if memory serves, Agfa make some good ones.

    Hi All,

Thanks for all of your responses..

Samson: The scanner is the 'photo' version, which does indeed come with a transparency adapter, but it's a case of a slide at a time (and there are literally thousands!)..

Given that the results may be dubious with a flat-bed, do you know of anywhere (or anybody) who would be willing to rent a slide scanner? I don't think I would make further use of a slide-scanner, so either renting one, or buying a flat-bed (which could be used for other purposes) would seem to be the way to go...

    Thanks for your help,
    Krusty

    Hi Krusty,

    Ive got a dual scanner
    It's an Epson,

Epson Perfection 1650 Photo Desktop Flatbed scanner - USB

It's good in the fact that it takes negative 35mm film
and positive slide films, and does a strip of negs at a time
and up to 4 slides at a time.

it's usb of course and comes with photoshop elements

I think it was in the region of 250 punts but not too sure,
it's great quality but it is fairly slow at the higher resolutions.

I'd defo recommend it but if it's just for slides/film,
you'd be better off getting a dedicated scanner..
which would be smaller and faster..
