"The former government minister and former deputy leader of Fine Gael, Jim Mitchell, has died following a long illness.

Mr Mitchell, who was 56, died at his home in Dublin in the early hours of this morning.

Mr Mitchell, who lost his seat after 25 years in the May election, won widespread praise for his chairmanship of the DIRT inquiry into bogus bank accounts. "

I think Irish politics has lost one of its finest.

One of the very few in Irish Politics that actually was civic minded and did his job to the very best of his ability. He actually gave the impression and showed through his hard work that he cared about his job.

Rest in Peace Jim, you served your country with honour and dignity.

    Gandalf.

Proof yet again that the good die young...one of the few who, if you asked a question, would actually answer it, without bather. It was pity he lost his seat, no doubt the chancers in the dial will be eulogising the man with a straight face...

    Mike.
