It can be used to protect confidential information from people who you don't want to view it, or it can be used to digitally sign data that isn't hidden so you can prove that you wrote/sent it.

I can't think of a good link off the top of my head, so I guess here is a place to look -> http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Security/Products_and_Tools/Cryptography/PGP/Documentation/?tc=1

I've been using the free release of v7 for some time. Any big advantages with the new release?

(one of the reasons I stuck with 7 is that P Zimmerman swore blind there were no back doors in the program when he left - I see he's on the board of the new company though, which is comforting. Call it false trust if you like but you probably have to trust someone's word at some point)

V 6.x are the only versions with the source code available.
It depends on who you trust - and with what, i suppose...

    Get 'em here.

    rubberhose > PGP

LOL - that project was abandoned years ago (2000).
Even the webpage has been ripped down (6 months ago)

Besides it was hardly ready for mass market - you needed an unheathy knowledge of *nix just to make it work...

PS - sjones your homepage is down also...

Strange, i remember downloading it(for a friend) about 2 months ago.... I could be wrong though.. I got it for myself about a year ago.

And you don't need much knowledge to know how to use it. Its' documentation is easy to follow. But that's my opinion. You can have yours :p

gpg works just fine for me.. not that I ever send anything sensitive to warrant encryption, or that any of my mates would be arsed setting it up for themselves and installing my public key, let alone verifying the signature on an email!

But hey, knowing we have access to this technology makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :)

    Teeth.

it's not really about sensitive material for me,

its about having the privacy you and i deserve and the unwanted snooping of .gov prats

About 2 years ago if I remember rightly. The US finally dropped the restriction on exporting keys stronger than 40bits. Part of the reason they finally dropped it was Zimmerman's putting the full version of PGP on the PGPi website with a little note saying you couldn't download the strong encryption version if you were outside the US (:D scared me off, that did). Microsoft were also egging Congress on as they felt a little uncompetitive when foreign companies were offering something they couldn't.

There's still the embargo on exporting to nasty places like Cuba, Iran, north Korea and so on.
