Wardriving

Has anyone here tried "Wardriving" in Ireland?
Wardriving means driving around on your car with your laptop and a wirelwss card (802.11) looking for unsecured networks. Check www.wardriving.com.
Programs like NetStumbler(PC-www.NetStumbler.com) and macstumbler(Mac - www.macstumbler.com) scan the airwaves for networks.

I got a laptop a few days ago and had to try it out. A brief drive around Dublin picked up loads of networks. I didn't manage to gain any usefull access to any of the networks (too much traffic (the car type), so I couldn't stop and try - only tried one - got my comp saying I was connected but not much else.

Anyone found any places where free internet access can be gained, or have any tips?

Here's a list of the places my computer picked up.

It's be done by Enigma/DIT. Have a look at http://www.enigma.ie/wardrive/80211dublin.pdf. They've got maps and everything.

    Thats pretty good report.
Have you managed to gain usefull access to any networks?

If the network hasn't got WEP is it easy enough to get onto it, and have a port to the internet, say?

Gaining access to private networks is illegal. Wardriving isnt (disabling TCP/IP is a common choice among wardrivers to prevent their laptops from trying to get an ip/etc).

There are a number in Sandyford - Stillorgan area - with ESSID of PUBLIC. You can use these. You just set to DHCP and use your regular POP SMTP server settings.

In Kerry we also have one at the Kerry Technology Park. ESSID is FREESPOT and you set your card to DHCP. It feeds into DSL.

I know of approx 6 other places in Dublin which will be offering free wireless hotspots in Jan-Feb.

I've been doing some war-driving in & around Ennis lately with absolutely zero results. So much for the Information Age Town...
