    Imagine if you will:
A tunnel dug from ireland to australia,Completely insulated to protect from heat and assuming an adequate air supply and that the earth does not explode/implode. What happens if you jump in the top?
    Do you:
A: Become stuck at the centre of the earth
B: Travel through to the other side an emerge at the other side at the same speed as you entered the tunnel at.
    C: Or something else?

Answers on the back of a fifty euro note please

I was thinking that you would come out at th same speed as you entered you would need someone there to stop you fallling back in tho. Altho the air resistance might mean you don't make it out the other end.
    Interesting topic

I read about this on HowStuffWorks.

Basically, you will fall through the earth, emerge on the other side, then fall thorugh, out the other side....basically, this happens infinitively.

What would happen (if the tunnel was a vacuum) is that you would speed up as you approach the centre of the earth, reach a maximum speed at the centre and slow down as you head off towards the other side and you would come out in Australia at the same speed as you went in at here and would then get pulled in the opposite direction.

If the tunnel wasn't a vacuum (how would you get out otherwise?), you'd get slowed down by friction the whole way through and mightn't make it to Australia before getting pulled back. This would happen a few times, going a shorter distance each time. Eventually, you'd be stopped at the centre of the earth.

    Gets you thinking...
I think Ciarans hit the nail on the head there..
You would fall towards the centre...accelerating all the time.. then once u pass the centre u would start decelerating towards to opposite end, eventually stopping and falling towards the centre again, accelerating towards the other side but each time you do this, the journey becomes shorter and shorter until you eventually stop at the centre
Gl getting out of that mess

    Ladder? ;)

What would the air pressure be like in the centre? Just out of interest

Would you not be ripped apart/implode from being pushed/pulled by gravity in/from all directions?

I'd image I would get eaten by dinosaur people living beneathe the surface. Or at least be used as a sex toy, by their huge, scaly, hideous women. But as the fates would be, I'd probably end up as a toilet brush for an obese brontosaurus man. Icky... I squirm at the thought of it. In fact, there's probably lots and lots of squirmy things down there. In Australia, that is... Squirmy!

How long would it take to get to the other side? You'd die of starvation!

As t.v. never lies, once u get to the centre of the earth, you will emerge in a wonderous lanscape with trees, rivers, caves and of course pre-historic creatures. Even a blue cloud-filled sky can be seen as you gaze at the magnificent scenery surrounding your boat or was it a submarine?...what the hell am i talking about...must be those damn insanity peppers again...oh sweet jebus, look out for that flying monkey !!! Ah my eye, my poisoned eye, god damn you, i know where you live you simian son of a bitch. No I'm not ok, that fooker has stolen all the cheese...there's no cheese. Oh I wish I was back in Leitrim with my baby penguins...

Ive been bringing this in conversation for about 3 years now, I thought you might explode/implode/ when you reach the centre.
