I'm thinking of going to San Franciso in the summer of 2003 to live with relatives. Now, I'll only be 19 by then and just completed my LC, but I was wondering what kind of work is out there for 19 year old's without any qualifications(yet)

Whats it like anyway? All I've seen is whats on TV. Looks hilly :) Is it cheap, exspensive? What are the people like?

I'd like your opinions and experiences please

    Thanks

Can't say that I've ever been there, in fact I've never been in the US, however I am planning on going.

I donno much bout the place but I have been told that its the GAY CAPITAL of America.

There is an advantage to this of course depending on your sexuality. [blink] eyelash [/blink]

If you are gay (or even bi) then its definately the stop to visit.

On the other hand, if you are straight (like myself) it is also a good stop cos, while the majority of guys that are walking the streets are gay.... there are more single females to chase!!!

I spent a summer there when I was 19. It was pretty expensive but we were all making $400+ a week and managed to drink every night bar two all summer! Accomodation was about $100 pw and very hard to find but I believe that's all changed since the downturn in the economy.

I'm not sure what the work availability is like there right now, but a couple of the lads got in to furniture removal. There's a few Irish companies involved in that sort of work along with construction and painting. I worked in IT there but doubt there's any work in that area now, similar to here, without any qualifications or experience.

The people were reasonably friendly, and especially towards the Irish because a lot of them can give you exactly in percentages how much Irish they are themselves. There is however a lot of bums and weirdos there, but they are for the best part harmless. They're funny more than anything when you get used to them.

It's not quite as memphis put it about the gays, the majority of guys walking the streets would not be gay. They're generally in an area called the Castro, where I saw places like the Blue Oyster bar from Police Academy! Some crazy stuff there but good fun as long as you're not homophobic.

I could go on about that place for hours! Had a brilliant time there and would definitely recommend it.

feel free to e-mail me with specific questions and I will answer them the best that I can. It is really expensive to live here, but housing is one of the main financial drags, and it sounds like you got that one covered. Also, most salaries are adjusted so you generally make more. If you dont have experience you might try some bar work, there are loads of them all around the city, and the summertime this place is jammed with tourists. Will you have a work visa, no matter if you dont. You can prob. get work either way. Anyway, contact me if you like.
    Debra
