I just noticed the other day how many people that post here a LOT and yet never end up on IRC.

As a matter of interest, why dont people use IRC more?

Just interested in non-IRC'ers pls :)

Well, as someone who only uses IRC a little but posts here a lot, there's a few possibilities that I can see, Dusty...

    1. They don't know about IRC.

    2. They prefer web boards to "real-time" chat or simply don't like IRC.

    3. They post from work and are behind a firewall that blocks the IRC port(s) or server(s).

Excuse my ignorance but how do you get into the Boards chat room on IRC?

The reason is because a handful members refer to IRC constantly without ever mentioning what the f`uck it is.Ive been on these boards for a while now and this is the first time anybody has mentioned what it is.They just keep refering to IRC,as if it is s0me sort of a secret society.
Ive just tried connecting and it didnt work:(

I've popped my head in from time to time - whenever I do no one seems to be talking. I suppose a) it takes some time to get to know the people and b) it helps to know some people.

I've not got a great attention span so a) is out and I know no one so that's b) down too :D

IRC is an even spammier medium than the boards, at least with these forums theres some structure for discussions. Its bad enough I have to read some of the ****e people post here non stop besides going into a channel to be bombarded by it.

I'm also afraif after seeing those choice quotes on yerma.com

I use IRC a lot, but every time I've been to the channel, no one has really been around (with the odd exception or 2, of course... I remember having a good chat with Bard one day)

I'll probably try it in a little while though...

    That's always been my excuse.

I went into IRC a couple of times, and nobody seemed to be saying anything....
so I said hello, and then got bombarded with "STFU", and "be quiet you a-hole",

so I stayed in there being quiet and still there was no chatting or discussion and only the rarest of exchanges which seemed mostly to be in jokes and privates comments,

I've used IRC for dod clan chats and its great but the few times I've been in the boards room, it all seems more trouble that its worth,

is there a guide for the IRC room in the FAQ section or anywhere else, that might get more people into the room to try it out

    a) Looking for adnans - he's a bastard to find, but you can be sure he'll be on IRC

    OR

    b) I'm drunk\drinking

So essentially what you're saying is you don't know how?

I mostly look at boards from work.

I'm sure there probably is a wirefall or summat but I haven't a clue how to use IRC so it's a moot point.

Would be nice though as I have quite a bit of nothing to do time during the average "working" day.

The time line on comments and responses in irc is completely different than boards so yes it can be "spammier" but generally its a good laugh. I use it all the time and enjoy it without feeling over burdened with "spam" :P

btw yellum, you dont /have/ to read "some of the ****e people post here". tbh my advice is to unbutton your top shirt button there, climb of the pole that seems to be wedged up yer ass. If thats not an option I suppose you could just not read the bits you dont like...

Its tough if your new to it. You dont know the protocal for being in that kind of environment and its rare that you are let away with anything. That said on quakenet usually people arent that unfriendly to newbies, unless you say something really stupid or in really bad taste.

so I stayed in there being quiet and still there was no chatting or discussion and only the rarest of exchanges which seemed mostly to be in jokes and privates comments,

probably 90% (or more) of the people that use irc idle there while they are online. They are doing other stuff and just take a look back every now and again to see whats been said. Again it all depends on what time of day it is and what channels your in.

I've used IRC for dod clan chats and its great but the few times I've been in the boards room, it all seems more trouble that its worth,

Its worthwhile once your inside the loop. Boards beers take on a whole new meaning because you will know the people at them a lot better. irc is also a medium to take advantage of the pooled knowledge and skillz of people that know a hell of a lot about virtually anything you can think to ask. (that said asking for answers and getting them are two very different things.)
is there a guide for the IRC room in the FAQ section or anywhere else, that might get more people into the room to try it out [/B]

    Getting started

Firstly if you can get the hang of using Boards and the tags system for making things bold etc then you will get your head around irc in no time.

You will need an irc client of some sort. If your using a PC running windows of any shape, colour or design then I would recommend mIRC. Available for free download at: www.mirc.com

Once installed and running the following commands, (commands can be recognised by the / immediatly preceding the command) will be neccessary:

    /server irc.barrysworld.com
    /nick <username>
    /join #<channel name> (i.e. - #boards.ie, #fortress.ie, #quake.ie )

Any of the other more advanced commands are available in the mirc help file.

As to what you should/shouldnt do is probably something that can only be learned by trial and error. There are more users in #fortress.ie than ever and less chat. Bring back the chat..
