We are MAME, resistance is futile, you will be assilimilated.

those of us with sub 1ghz processors are not too fond of MAME. its grand for the majority of games pre 1993(damn you midway i really want to play nba jam the way it way meant to be played)

anything past cps2 is unplayabe and even the cps2 is pretty slow.

so when we want our joust, defender, missile command, ikari warriors, cabal or pacman fix mame will be fired up. the rest of the time its kawaks of final burn alpha.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is still the second best fighter behind tekken3.

anyway our main problem is if a playstation can be emulated at full speed on a p2 400mhz(not including those fancy framebuffer effects), even with the overhead of emulating 1000+ games in a single binary they should be able to get reasonable performance out of mame with newer games(its not like the 1000+ games are being emulated at the same time).

I don't think the CPS2 games are that slow. Also, the main issue with MAME is that the developers are more interested in emulating the game hardware 100% than making the game run at a decent framerate.

I built a MAME Cab and I had a Duron 950 MHz and almost ALL games run perfect on it, including CPS2 games

I've been a mamer for a number of years now, it's a fantastic application , my fav. games being r-type, wonderboy, shinobi and bubble bobble.

I'm not too interested in the games post 1993.

    I hear you !!

there are, however, some excellent more "modern" games (ie. post 1990) such as Super Puzzle fighter and PuzzLoop (in the latest version, 0.62)

My Fva's are Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Football Champ, Street Fighter II Champion Edition and X-Men VS Street Fighter to name but a few - I also like Killer Instinct (Emulater by Ultra64)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

Don't get started on PuzzLoop I've played enough trippy Japanese games;)
It's common knowledge that MAME aims to emulate the hardware 100% but it's also common knowledge that if you can avoid using MAME, do so as FBA and others are far better at emulating CPS1/2. As for KI it's without a doubt my favorite arcade, RCP has done wonders with his emulator and it will run very well on a P3 500mhz, however KI is WIP in MAME and you can bet your ass it's going to need a beast of a machine just to make it playable:mad:
Oh yes and welcome to the emulators forum Deadl0ck:)

I think the word 'almost' pretty much sums that up. Considering that games before the 90's take up about 70% of what mame runs in total.
Also, they try to have games run exactly as they would have in a cabinet, but thats a pretty big cop out to say thats the only reason the games run slow. If that was the case, then why is it that sound emulation takes up as much as cpu emulation. To this day i have yet to see a mainboard with a sound processor even a tenth of the power of the main cpu.

Also they don't always even get up to the levels that the specific emulators get to. They never emulated raster effects in neo geo games. Loads of taito's stuff is missing blending effects. And they spend WAY too much time emulating gambling and card games which makes diddly all sense.

Maybe...one day, when i have a machine capable of running mame, i'll stop whining about it :)

Thanks for the Welcome LoGiE ....

Good point about the Sound Emulation bug..I did have an SB live in the machine as the sound card...

Anyhow - I have to rebuild my Cabinet now - I was living abroad (in Sweden) and thats where I built the cabinet, but I couldn't bring it back with me, but I did bring the Control Panel, whic is the most complex part..so someday after Christmas, I rebuild it...

Anyhow guys - check out me Website :

    MAME ROM Links

Sorry m8, just give the old charter a read and welcome to the forum :)

    No probs deadl0ck
bugs is renowned on this board for his dislike of MAME and frankly i agree with him. The developers should take a look at how the sound is emulated one of these days:) Anyway If it's taito games I use Raine and if it's NeoGeo Its NeoRageX all the way.
Nice site btw but it might get snipped by Ronan|Raven or Kairo because it has links to cetain sites;)

I never had any probs with mame running any game.

But i never used it for post 93 emus.
Always used whatever emu was made for the specific rom which can be a pain as i forget which to use sometimes :)

And seeing as we dont pay for Mame i cant see how anyone can bitch about it ,it is free and does what it says on the box.

    /me strokes me 2ghz with g3 ti 500 pc :)

Sorry about the link to my Site guys - didn't read the forum rules (as usual)

    :D

Seems you didn't read the Sig image rules either. i.e. You're not allowed to have an animated .gif in your signature. :P

Mame is grand, but it's not exactly a resoure friendly emulator. I dont like the interface for configuring keys and stuff in Mame. Used to run mame on an old p166..and I found that If the sound was disabled , most of the newer games were playable. Maybe they should check the old sound coding.

WinKawaks is a clear winner for CPS/NeoGeo :)

MAME is Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. Its a beast of a project - open source - started in 1997 by Nicola Salmoria. Emulates everything from Space Invaders to Killer Instinct (and a few thousand in between).

Are you sure that the version of KI emulated by MAME is the arcade-machine and not the SNES version? How close is it btw.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well mame doesn't emulate snes for a start. Also play the arcade version and the snes version. Theres a huge difference such as all the 3D effects being missing.

I'm a bit of a MAME head allright. I have the whole set up to 0.69

Am building a cab, holding off on it at the moment till I get into my new house. Deadlock, would appreciate any advice (already been to all the sites, but would like to know what you used, software and hardware (I have an XP2100, 512MB and ATI Radeon 8500 which I intend putting into the cab), and where you got your cab etc....)

Bah! another thread resurected:D There are two current threads relating to KI and KI2 and the only emulator that emulates them to an acceptable standard.
    You need..
    (The Emulator)
    U64EMU 3.05
    (Roms)
KI or KI2 which are 4mb
    (Hard Drive)
The HD images for the game you want to play
    Killer Instinc 1 IMG (94MB)
    or
    Killer Instinc 2 IMG (130MB)

If you need help with configurating U64EMU see the threads I mentioned.
