105 people dead over a fukin sentence  wtf!!!

Rioting first flared on Wednesday, initially over a newspaper report saying the Prophet Mohammad would probably have chosen to marry one of the beauty queens if he had seen them.

Is this incredible or what, all those people died because of the above sentence, a few meaningless words.

    Madness.

I wonder how the hyper-lefties (who spun the 9-11 tale into one of bin Laden's heroism) are going to spin this one?

I dunno, it's a bit funny when people denounce Christian fundamentalism easily, yet can't bring themselves to say bad things about people who happen to be Muslim.

Anyway, good for a few laughs.

    I don't find that funny.

I do find hyper-lefties hilarious though.

Good for a few laughs? Of course a hundred odd dead people is so funny, they should show it on Christmas day on BBC1.

Other than your link, what do your comments have to do with the topic?

And what are "hyper-lefties" (definition please)?

It's like people can't read English. BuffyBot, I refer you to my previous post.

Victor, I'm very tired. I'm trying to describe a certain type of person who is a leftist extremist, and very very stupid. Their world view is very inconsistent. They hate the West, and yet live there. The US of A is their mortal enemy, the great Satan. They insult Christianity as a whole because of a few fundamentalists, yet have a protectionist attitude towards all things Islam (even if they happen to be bin Laden or the Bali Bomber).

    They are extremely funny.

    Am I making any sense?

More twisted than funny, I'm not religious but even so there's very little that would provoke me into doing some of the stuff that these people do, almost nothing. Programmed idiots, dangerous ones at that.

Interestingly, I'm sure I'd be classed in this group by you - I'm hugely suspicious of the motives and actions of the USA, and I certainly have very little time for Christianity... Well, or for any religion really.

That said I'm not actually a leftie, given I'm a fairly strong believer in the economic principles of capitalism. Ho hum :)

As to the Nigeria thing... Yeah, the religion of peace and love is at it again eh? Interesting that the Islamics seem to believe that religious tolerance only goes one way - they were apparently massively offended by the holding of the Miss World contest in the (mostly Christian) south of the country while they were off doing the whole Ramadan thing. It's not like they were being herded up and forced into the venue to watch it...

well what do you expect from a country that has around 400 ethnic groups living inside it? mix that with religion... you get the point. whoever decided to host the Ms World beauty contest in a country where they stone women to death is either mad or stupid.

and oh yeah, justhalf, do you always list Islam alongside Bin Laden and the Bali bomber? they make a wonderful pair dont they?

Back on topic, the riots had f>ck all to do with the Miss World pagent and everything to do with the extremism of
the Muslim population of Nth Nigeria, who were apparently concerned that women were not being respected by such a
degenrate event....hmmmm. These would be the same ppl who wish to stone women to death if they transgress Sharia law.

    Mike.

You mean I can't call these Islamic fundamentalist terrorists Muslims? That's certainly what bin Laden claimed to be, and what he was fighting for. Fighting for the sake of Islam.

I don't tar all Muslims with this brush, but I do accept that these people believe themselves to be Muslim. And this form of Islam (the one that justifies flying planes into buildings, and bombing a crowded nightclub) is a bad thing. I can bring myself to say it. Can you?

And Shinji, you wouldn't be classed in that group. You don't hate capitalism, and you don't have an inconsistent view of religions. One of the main things I've seen in hyper-lefties is a hatred of all things Christian (using typical atheist arguments against it, such as haha the retards don't realise there's no God) while talking of how noble Islam, Fallung Gong (sp?), Buddhism, Marxism, etc are. They have plenty of time for all religions, unless it's Christianity.

By the way, hyper-lefties are a subset of the group retards.

I don't see them as funny, I see them as misguided. Unfortunately fundementalism of any sort gives you a rather blinkered worldview...thats part of it's power. Logic and fundementalism don't mix very well.

as a non practicing muslim (although im not boozing throughout the ramadan period), yes i can say that. as long as people read islam and bomb in the same sentence, it makes the religion of Islam less likeable. same way, when you read priest and rape, it makes the religion of Christianity unfavourable to many.

anyway, i'll stop before amp smacks my bottom for going off the topic once again.

Miss World contestants will be wearing swimsuits dripping with blood when the ever less popular competition returns to London. discuss.

How exactly is a beauty contest contrary to Islamic princples? It's not as if watching a few scantily clad models forces you to break a fast is it...waste of life over what is essentially a tempest in a teapot. Ridiculous.

I thought it was pretty disgusting the way most of the hopefuls were all smiles as they disembarked from the plane and raved about how happy they were to have gotten back safely. The smiles were a little innappropriate considering their contest inadvertandtly killed 200 people.I didnt hear one of those interviewed express any sympathy for the damage to Nigeria that the contest caused.
TBH they could have not forseen such serious trouble but IMO those 200 people would not be dead today if the contest had not come to Nigeria. But then again they can hardly be blamed-violence on this scale wasnt expected.

I always thought that the miss world contest was a big joke... worthy of much laughter at the epic cheesiness of the whole event.

But saying it's an offence to Islam is something I don't understand. Actually is there anything these days that isn't some sort of offence to Islam. It’s the people who stir up the rabble, the type of people who caused the genocide in Rwanda that are the real problem. When mob rule happens all sense goes out of the window and people can die.

They weren't saying that the contest was offensive to Islam, it was the article that was written about the contest that caused the problem, a lot of the local people found it offensive but then again, so do a lot of people in the West.
And before anyone says "well we don't go around killing people...", that region is pretty volitile at the best of times, this was just another excuse that certain parts of that community needed.

That's true but it makes you wonder what goes on in their wonderful little minds dunnit?

I'm completely non religious and it would take a lot more than a newspaper article to offend me or miss world girlies trotting around, it would have to something more heavy like an iron bar in the mush befored I'd be offended :p

Probably stuff like the extreme poverty they have to live in, and other stupid things like that.

I was listening yesterday on 5 Live to Julia Morley, the head of Miss World, and she said that the contest was going very well over there, they got all the swimsuit shots filmed over there, then some idiot prints this and incites violence. I agree, the journo should've had more cop on.

Talking about the poverty in the region, maybe the Nigerian goverment should think more about providing money to pay for sanitation and clean water to these people instead of spending millons on devloping a Space Programme

That's definitely not gonna happen, the space programme is much more important than looking after their own people. But in all seriousness this probably won't change, looking after their own people seems to be a far fetched idea.

I do actually understand they have it tough over there but still not a reason to kill, I've had a very hard life with lots of bad things happening to me, I'm not gonna kill anyone over it, I'm gonna enjoy my life for what it is, life's short enough without other people taking it from you.

Somehow I doubt that you have experienced the poverty, misery and hardship some of these people have experienced.....doesn't explain of excuse it, but people who say "I've had a hard life, but..." have invariably experienced a quality of life thats a damn sight better than the people they are talking about.

I'm just saying it's no excuse to kill another human being.

there is a not an unreasonable suspicion that the riots were not a spontaneous act but a calculated political act designed to further weaken the reputation of the president in the run up to the nigerian general elections.
Misguided or not the attempt to host the miss world contest was an attempt by the federal government to show the nigeria and the world who has the power to impose their authority over the country.By managing to get the contest relocated it is the theocracy who are currently in ascendancy.

the "rebellious" 13 northern provinces who have implemented sharia law in direct contrevention of the federal constitution have been bouyed by its sucess and have futher more upped the ante by calling a fatwa against the journalist Isioma Daniel whose comments "sparked" the riots.
The riots which killed 200 people,.Were far from random acts of violence, the rioters torched not only churches, but also media and political offices and secular political rivals were singled out for special attention.

If ever there was a clear case of a politically convienient scapegoat then it is probaly that of Isioma Daniel. The Islamisists were clearly spoiling for a show of stength since the federal court intervened in a number or high profile sharia death sentences comuting the sentences to lesser penelties.Meanwhile the Government is reluctant to concede it is loosing control to the opposition, far better to collude with the opposition in the misconception that Daniels comments were the sole cause and reason for the riots.

I feel that Nigeria is on the slow slide into a full scale civil war.

I actually feel there is a strong case for sending in troops to sort this hellhole out before there's a Rwanda style situation.
