Candle Sculptures

I came up with this idea that I want to try and make a couple of sculptures with some rather thick candles, roughly about 10cm in diameter, and wanted to get some tips or advice on doing this.

What tools should I use? Would a craft knife and a couple files do?

And how will I go about polishing them afterwards? What should I do to them at the end to get a smooth, tidy finish? I came up with the idea of softening the outside by holding a lighter close to it but that could be sketchy!

Lastly, has anyone seen anything done like this before? Any examples?

You could always try making your own candles in the desired shape. It'd probably give better results. I'm not sure exactly how you would go about making the moulds though.

Eek! The thing about doing something like that is that I would know less about moulding candles than cutting them up.

At least with this I know how to use a knife! :)

Well to make a candle mould what yo'd do is first carve some material into the shape you like, and then make the cast from that.

Then you'd be left with a resusable cast to make multiple candles from it. (o:

You could proabbly make casts etc... with Fimo (stuf fyou mould them bake in an oven to harden.

Or you could check out some of the equipment for making models in Gamesworkshop or other stores like that.
