i'm not taking the lazy man approach here , already tried a solution, i am new to linux and hell not taking to it as quick as xp, but that'll change in time, very solid set up, nice touches to it

first of all ,. soundcard don't work , the emuk10 diver is installed, but no sound coming from speakers

also having problems setting up my internet connection,

i dl the conexant hsf compliant driver, for my 2.4.18-14 kernel

loaded it , now it reads there is a generic modem installed,

but maybe there is a problem with ppp or something?

p.s. during installation i chose server as my setup over workstation a potential mistake?

    any help much appreciated :D

What kind of card and how are the speakers connected? The Audigy card can be a little awkward, as can digital speakers.

There are a few things you can try. First bring up a mixer (volume control) applet - a right click on the main volume control widget in the bottom right of the panel should do. Mess with the sliders to see if you can get anything.

Second, you can try the driver available at http://opensource.creative.com/

Third, you can try switching to ALSA drivers rather than the regular kernel drivers. Easiest way to do that is visit http://psyche.freshrpms.net/ which has lots of RedHat 8.0 specific RPM packages, ALSA drivers and libs among them. Note that when ALSA drivers load, they do so with all of the sound outputs muted so you'd have to mess with a mixer applet to sort that out.

I don't know the details for that particular driver, but the device name may be a bit different to normal - a hardware modem plugged into COM1 will come up as /dev/ttyS0. The device name for your modem may be /dev/ttyCNX0 or something. Have a look at the docs that came with the driver, or search the web.

Your choice of server vs. workstation install doesn't really mean much - that just varies RedHat's choice of packages to install. At any time you can go back to the CDs and rpm --install whatever package you like. Run 'rpm --query --all | sort | less' to see what packages you currently have installed.

Prolly best to try plugging into the analog port first, see if he's actually getting sound?

(He's right you know. EMU10K is a pain in the butt.)

Not emu10k1 so much as the Audigy - mostly because it's new and the drivers haven't caught up yet.

I wouldn't swap mine for anything - I got one of the original SB Live! cards the week they released Linux drivers and I've never had much trouble since, aside from the teething troubles with the very early binary-only drivers. I've never used the digital output though.

Also, if you're using one of the Gateway 2000 SB Live! (Value) cards, then you're out of luck. AFAIR there was no analogue version of the card, and the digital output isn't like the digital for any of the other SB Live! cards. A quick search on Google will tell you that while they're working on new drivers, neither Gateway/Creative are giving the necessary info to complete them.

I have one myself, trying to decide what replacement card to buy at the moment... :(

i've got one of the afore mentioned SBlive cards from gateway, it was purchased in the summer of 1999 and it has both analogue and digital output, mixie when did you get yours? since or before then ?

p.s emu10k works fine with my sweet card (never to be changed tbh)
