The (official?) Xbox magazine had an article on how to paint/mod your Xbox. Not quite the same as a mod chip, but still voids the warranty normally...

Pfff. It's not like I'm ever going to get broadband in my area anyway.

Just switch off the chip when you want to play online and therfore i doubt it can be discovered.
