the students of w.i.t. are joining forces today and staging what we hope to be the biggest stike this college has ever seen!!
today we hope to highlight the problems that all students face. lack of student accomodation, increase in registration fees, the re-introduction of college fees!!!!!
the list goes on and on, we want the government ministers to know that we want changes to be made. we want our voice heard!!!!!!!!!
we are not the only ones suffering from these cut-backs so i hope that we will be supported by everyone......let me know what we all think.

Well the report on the radio said that about 700 people protested. Wonder if that made an impression. Problem is we,re pretty laid back here in Waterford. Only 40 people took part in the last protest.

we had a walkout protest a week or so back, around 1500 between GMIT galway and GMIT castlebar.

dont really think that its achieving anything tho...

Um, if only 40 people attend a walkout then obviously people don't care enough about it, eh?

Its probably the WIT Card protest they are refering to for the 40 people one. That was impressive bull**** and propaganda on the part of the SU prez at the time hence when he called a strike everyone went home to bed for the day instead of standing around at the gates (30 at most at the font gate and maby the othe 10 at the back one)

RTE got them to hudle together and filmed in tight so it looked like a crowd on TV :)

The whole WIT Card issue was inflated and the prez was only using it to make a name for him self...

As for the WIT Card. It is completely againist the law not to be able to pay for goods with legal tender.

The WIT Card protest was just about not liking it and not the law.

You should be able to pay everywhere with cash no matter what.

It is like if you went into a shop and they said that they only took credit cards.

Another thing how come 40 people got on the telly 2 years ago and The WIT protest on fees got no coverage?

No it's not illegal (credit cards and laser cards are legal tender so to speak and there's quite a few shops won't accept them). If anything, paying with plastic is MUCH handier. A vast amount of corporations in this country have these electronics cards that you load with cash (in denominations as small as a 1 euro coin). And to be honest, it's far easier just to stick cash on your card at the start of the week and forget about it, it makes it easier to budget at least.

    What is the problem??

The WIT Card is not Legal tender.

It is againist consumer law not to allow customers pay with legal tender which is CASH weather plastic is easier or not, anyway shop cannot cut up coins and notes if your over your limit

Plastic is handier but more expencive then cash. (Note Budget 2003)

It does not make it easier to budget due to the fact that you think you have plent on your card (IMO).

The problem with the WIT card is that certain area in the college are WIT card only, thus legal tender cannot be used.
It is also stupid as far as the college is concern as visitors to the college do not have wit cards.
Student do not have much money to put on to ther WIT card and if they do put money on the WIT card they would end up having to use the college shops etc as you cannot us the WIT card else where.

It would be handy if you could put 1,2,5,10,20,50 cent peices into the mashines around the college as you end up with so many coins anyway. (Certain machines don't take €1 coins and the SU had to kick up a fuss to get €2 coin put on to it).

Basically you should be allow pay by legal tender everywhere in the college rather then being forced to use it by the college, it is up to you at the end of the day weather you use it or not. Just as it is up to you weather or not you use plastic.

Are You sure that plastic is legal tender? (ie MasterCard, LaserCard etc. not WIT)?

Cheques are legal tender therefore i assume Lasercard is legal tender too. I don't know about Credit Cards.
