I bet they will block out some of the sport for rights issues
was anyone watching the soccer programme on it tonite at 9.30-Sgorio-it would be fantastic if we could see that
but I wouldn't be getting my hopes up for it along with the soccer though
it could just be a repeat of the whole ITV News-Champions League saga

This really IS good news for those of us who believe in television without frontiers.

It may hark back to my younger days (before getting RTE Relays, I really AM old) of watching Welsh programming on HTV, but I love the sound of the Welsh language.

It's finished broadcasting for the night, but it's still a clear info card with a viewers hotline phone number.

However it doesn't say "to receive this channel", so hopefully they've sorted out all the rights issues etc.

me thinks of the time that all the BBC channels etc. were clear for a few days. has anyone checked those in case of a mess up

We have it now, and we are happy :) so the less that is said about it, the more chance we have it will stay with us. I'm tempted to delete this thread if the powers that be see it!

it wouldn't make a difference if you deleted it or not because it has already been posted on another website. has it moved to 2D like they told me they would about a year back?

According to DigitalSpy readers, its been added to all Sky and FTV cards as of this morning. Whether this is an error or not is unknown. S4C have made no statement (on their web site anyway) on the matter.

It might be known on Digital Spy but do they (S4C and the rest of the UK population)know that we can get it here? Dum-dee-dum....

Well common sense somewhere prevails. Then again who speaks welsh? Funny the hassle I went to get it switched on from here on the bbc card... Just because I could.

If there is sport on S4C will it go encrypted????? mmmm suspect..

good news sort of according to sky digi online S4C will remain free to air on 184 after a positive respone from the free tests. they got this from a S4c spokesman. whether sky will block it here is another question though

if it remains FTA then Sky can't remove it unless instructed to do so by S4C. if it stays i will be very happy :)

i cant see what the fuss is about really isnt S4C digital in WELSH all the time with little or none of the channel 4 programs on it. the channel 4 progams are on S4C analogue. correct me if im wrong on this point. but unless people are going to take up learning welsh on a massive scale i dont think there would be much interest. sure you could watch the pictures all right but not much else.

i will watch for the lovely sport it has to offer. it could be in Welsh, Hulgarian or even Turkish for all i care. watching sport on German television hasn't bothered me so why will watching in Welsh be any different. lots of the programming carries English subtitles so it would be like watching a foreign language film, something else i have done in the past so why change now

I suppose you're right really - though as someone who used to be able to read and write Welsh fairly well (forgotten it, as with French and Spanish, unfortunately, due to complete lack of use in the past 10 years) but never actually spoke a word of it, I'm actually rather excited by the arrival - might just rekindle my interest in one of my favourite languages. Couldn't give a toss about the sport content TBH.

I suppose for normal people, they might see it as possibly heralding the arrival of C4 one of the days, though due to possible rights issues that wouldn't be a factor with S4C digidol (and the difference between this being FTA and C4's being FTV), I wouldn't see it that way myself.

I also think S4C is good and have watched a couple of progs using the sub titles . I always thought this channel was part of channel 4 ,yet last night the news came on (newyddion) and it was BBC news, same music etc... same graphics except with all Welsh names. I'm confused.

Also is there anyone out there that cannot provide translation for the key words in Welsh , ie .news, sport, films etc...etc...

It would be useful and save having to go to the EPG all the time to get detail.

    Thanks

Its simple enough. (straying into non-Satellite territory)

Its the *Welsh* 4th Channel, and not Channel 4 in Wales. Its a different company, different rules and regulations. Its analogue service transmits Channel 4 programmes, but prime-time on S4C is entirely in Welsh (as TG4 should be, between 6pm and 10pm)

When it was set up on 1st November 1982, all the Welsh programming that was on BBC 1 and 2, and HTV Wales, was moved to S4C. The BBC was nominated as the news provider. Also, programmes like Pobal y Cwm, its rural soap is produced by the BBC, incidentally predates S4C by 8 years or so. Most S4C sport is produced by the BBC, and HTV Wales (or Carlton or ITV1 Wales) also provides programmes, I cant remember off hand what it does though. Like TG4, S4C has a vibrant independent sector to fall back on for more programming.

To clarify further, its' run by an authority (like RTE), known as the Sienal Pedwar Cymru Authority, or to give it its former title in English, the Welsh Fourth Channel Authority. Its members are appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport. It is outside the regulatory control of the ITC. It is funded through a direct grant from HM Treasury (=3.2% of total television revenues in 1997, but adjusted in subsequent years to take account of inflation) and the profits from advertising sales.

S4C recieves 533 free hours of programming from BBC Wales, in addition has access to the entire C4 programming catelogue for free (for the analogue service). Programmes are independently commissioned from other broadcasters, including HTV Cymru (which Carlton have retained as the Welsh language brand).

S4C and the BBC also run the Welsh Assembly channel, S4C-2.

Whats more they [the welsh] didn't have to win a war of Independence, kill even more people after in a civil war and then wait 70 years to get National Language TV.

I don't know a word of Irish (wrong kind of School up North), but I totally and absolutely defend the right of everyone here to have TG4 / Irish Language broadcasting.

I think its brilliant how seriously the Welsh (or many of them) take their Language and Culture. I suspect we can learn something from Wales and how they do S4C
