“This night is a must for even those with a passing interest in hiphop.” Irish Times’ Club of the Week, Thurs 14th Nov 2002

This Saturday sees a unique showcase of talent by America’s most innovative rap label in 2002 - New York’s Definitive Jux. Def Jux stands out head and shoulders in that its artists all have an experimental edge – both in their production and their lyrics – that gives it an appeal that has reached to fans more accustomed all sorts of music – from electronica to indie-rock.

Appearing at the show will be label boss and ex-Company Flow rapper and producer: EL-P. A legend in the making if ever there was one, EL-P released his debut solo album ‘Fantastic Damage’ to universally euphoric acclaim with The Independent declaring it ‘Unquestionably the rap album of the year’ and none other than Elvis Costello declaring ‘The production is mindbending. A sonic genius like El-P, that’s the kind of boldness I want to work with.’

If EL-P feels that the production skills and ideas displayed on his formidable debut album have been somewhat upstaged this year; he will probably feel some solace in the fact that it has come from a producer on El-P’s own label – enter RJD2 whose groundbreaking ‘Dead Ringer’ album – a sublime mix of sounds which made album of the issue in Muzik, Jockey Slut and Seven- is set to feature heavily in top albums of the year polls for 2002 and firmly set this man alongside DJ Shadow, Moby and Timbaland as a producer who will change an entire musical landscape.

For those more fond of plain ol’ rapping – heightened by politically incisive and socially conscious rhymes – comes the excellent Boston MC Mr Lif. Again his superb debut album has just been released on Def Jux and is creating ripples amongst the hiphop community on both sides of the Atlantic, with URB already declaring it one of the finest hiphop albums of all time.

Opening the show for the Def Jux crew will be another MC/Producer who released a groundbreakingly good album in 2002 – Cork’s Exile Eye will be joined on this show by Irish Frestyle Rap champ MC Relevance.
