i was listening to paul field's hangover breakfast show and he was saying that phantom are putting together a top 30 tunes of the year so... in case i get reminded of songs i prefer i'm gonna wait and check a few replies b4 emailing them mine

anyway as it stands...btw only ur top 3 and i'm not sure if theres a differentiaition between irish and international but...

    my irish top 3 are:

the brown bear- the 66 electric
bringing the conversation down- the crayonz
    stabilizers- blotooth

other ones i had in my head were

    sometimes- babelfish
and the other crayonz tune (lyrics: i tried to remember what you failed to remember)
    all of gemma hayes singles

    my top 3 international:

    pounding-doves
    the scientist- coldplay
hard to explain- the strokes (that was this yr wasnt it?)

sigur ros's whole new album would be hear but due to lack of names and not releasing any singles they'll have to just do with a notable mention

ok so what do you think?

my apologies pigman, i bought it this year in about march, so i presumed (wrongly) that it was released then.

pigman, bringing the conversation down was released this year... it got a write up in hotpress on the first of march

    http://www.hotpress.com/archive/search.adp?q=the+crayonz

    is the link to follow...

falling out was released in 2001 so if *you* had bought the single then you would know when it was out

    mick

You're going by what's written in some magazine and I 'only' have an actual BOUGHT copy of the CD single in my hand right now with the year 2001 written on it as evidence to the contrary. Either way, the Crayonz have just got numerous mentions on this thread so my work here is done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

    irish:

    south by polar
brown bear by the 66 electric
    new star by berkeley

oh and in position by turn was this year too....seems like ages and ages ago i went to the launch of that...

    international:

badly drawn boy - have you fed the fish? ... its track 2 on the album, not sure if its a single or not though...
feeder - comfort on sound ... again i'm not sure if it was a single or not...
down - theres something on my side

there was probably stuff released at the start of the year that seems like it was further back and so don't come into consideration...

i may have to change em when i remember other releases...

    best albums

    feeder - comfort in sound
    weezer - maladroit
    mundy - 24 star hotel
    down - down 2
superjoint ritual - use once and destroy
badly drawn boy - have you fed the fish?

hmmmm...cant really think of anything else this year that had me hitting the repeat button....but once again i must say that theres probably something brilliant that hasn't crossed my mind...

There are so many good ones.

    Not so Irish:
    Incubus - Are you in
    QOTSA - No one knows
    Foo Fighters - The One

(I think all of those songs are this years...correct me if I'm wrong)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 726 ✭✭✭lamda

Incubus song comes form Morning View, released in 2001...

In your defence, the single emerged this year.

I know the single "emerged" this year...that's why I put it down...
Did you have to quote my whole post?!

the reasons i thought the song was released in march are because i know that phantom wer eplaying it alot then and becaus ei bought it then...

are you sure it isnt just copyrighted for 2001?

and i'm all for mentioning the crayonz, i think they're a great band

    very good!
Hmm...still not entirely sure about the Incubus one but I love it to bits so I'm sticking with it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭thedrowner

    irish:
    brown bear - the 66e
    south - polar
    summer song-turn

    international:
anything from 'trust-low' so whatever their first single is
if air released 10,000 hz legend this year then any of the singles off that
coldplay-the scientist (although this is one of my least favourite songs on the album)

also if youre going for more chart music i loved miss dynamite's song and the new justin timberlake one...he's uncannily michael jackson reminiscent

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 640 ✭✭✭knobbles

i'd give these my phantom irish vote...
    1. Woodstar - the last sad verse of a dumb punk song
    2. Nina Hynes - Mono Prix
    3. Turn - Another Year Over

#1 Doves - there goes the fear......and the rest
#2 Foo Fighters - all my life
#3 Gemma Hayes - back of my hand......and the rest

The Music - Take the long road and walk it
    Coldplay - the scientist
Badly Drawn Boy - silent sigh
Black Rebel MC - love burns
    The Vines - get free
    Fischerspooner - emerge
Flaming Lips - do you realise?
Trail Of Dead - it was there that i saw you
The Polyphonic Spree - Soldier Girl
Electric Soft Parade - Silent to the dark
Nirvana - you know you're right
Jimmy Eats World - Salt sweet sugar
    Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar
    Ian Brown - FEAR
Timo Maas - to get down
    tricky - evolution revolution ('01?)

TAKE A CHILL PILL PIGGY!! No need to sound so patronising. Save your evidence to the contrary for... an argument perhaps.

I work for Tower records. Let me clear up this 'Crayonz' dilema (if Ger would like to pop up and give me a hand here he's welcome)

THE CRAYONZ (who have my upmost respect) released their single 'bringing the conversation down' twice. The songs first release was in 2001, it's second release hit the shelves this year after The Crayonz made it through to the final of the Bacardi band of the year competition.

Now. All cleared up. And fair play Polarbelly for your choice. The Crayonz and Blotooth in the same top 3. A choice Pigman surely would not have made.

As I am no good at remembering particular tracks, I won't have any distinction for international and local tracks. Some that really come to mind are:

Bringing the Conversation Down -The Crayonz (Thanks Michael for reminding me about it!).
July -Mundy (that was this year, wasn't it?)
Whatever the new Nirvana one is called. It would have fit in perfectly on In Utero.
    Singular Death of Privacy -Brando.
And any of the new Sigur Ros.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 130 ✭✭horsekick

    Irish:

    Polar - South
    Turn - In Position
The Walls - To The Bright And Shining Sun
    Turn - Summer Song

    Other:

Foo Fighters - All My Life
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
Pearl Jam - I Am Mine
    QOTSA - No One Knows
    Doves - Pounding
    Idlewild - American English
Hoobastank - Crawling In The Dark

    Let the slating begin.............

Oooooooo Jimmy Eat World.. yummy yummy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,343 ✭✭✭polarbelly

i think we need a definition from the phantom lads whether it has to be released as a single or can it be an album track cos...

the remote part - the last tune on idlewilds album of the same name is class so i'd defo ad that to the international list... not too sure bout the single's, i love american english but it isnt half as good as a few of there slower tunes imo

and thanks back to front i agree, my top 3 irish are pretty class, so far there'll be no changing there

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 640 ✭✭✭knobbles

.....i think some of our lists would get out of control if
we had the freedom to name any album tracks,
though while we're near the topic i'd like to see what
albums all have discovered this year and why they're brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,343 ✭✭✭polarbelly

múm-beautiful (gave it away as a parting gift so i'll have to buy a new one)

sigur rós- i think you know why cos i've a feeling you have it

cornelius- saw them at witnness and man they were amazing, so went out and bought the album 'point'...class...you might know the song 'drop' the one with the japanese young guy washing his face in the video

    they're all excellent albums

    eeeeh...

gemma hayes, really moving, great guitar sounds

doves- pounding is a truely class song, and the others are excellent too, one of those albums to listen through and enjoy

idlewild- meant alot to me personally, i always enjoy they're music anyway...at first i didnt think it was a s good as either of the predecessors but it grew on me severely

more shall be added no doubt

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 640 ✭✭✭knobbles

yeah, i meant to check out that cornelius one cause 'drop'
    is groovy tune!

Well, well, well things have got heated in here haven't they. Even Tower Records had to step and and calm things down before it turned into mindless bloodshed.

I don't know if The Brown Bear counts yet as we havent released it yet but we are humbled by the inclusion. many thanks.

    Unreleased tracks make my list:

    Paper - Polar
    The Exhibitionist - Jessica Insane
    Volcano - Damien Rice

    International:

    Untitled No.3 - Sigur Ros
The green grass of tunnel - Mum
    Politik - Coldplay

    Worst:

    ANYTHING by Oasis

    Deep breaths...

    66e

    hello all!

Hope you are all well. Haven't been on the board in a long long time but I was told about this and thought I'd come to Mick's defence.

"bringing the conversation down" was only ever released once. This was....

......... in 2002. The copyright date was 2001 and it was recorded late 2001 as far as I can remember. I was released the same week it was reviewed in Hotpress Magazine.

very entertaining reading. Just when I thought we were forgotten about.

    take it easy

hey hey, my first encounter with this message board so i'm kinda nervous...where to put my hands....

anywho, i couldn't resist putting forward my own favourites

    Irish:

    See you Later- La Rocca

    Out Foreign:

    Green- Alex Lloyd

oh and it shouldn't really count but one song i never heard until this year is Red Army Blues by the Waterboys, for being an epic song i'm gonna chance the derision and put that in 20 years too late....here's to anarchy

Tenacious D -- Tribute when my friend Darren sings it is fast becoming the best song of 2002 for me. It's especially brilliant when he sings it while you're drunk.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 Gonzalez

    Mother of God,
I'm so drunk I think me head is about to revolve thrice more before finally spinning off and making an awful mess on the carpet that I, especially posthumously, can't clean up. I'm now leaning to the left I'm that drunk. A lot.
I forgot to mention The Scientist by Coldplay and I want to say that I can't wait for the Bell X1 gig in the Sugar Club.
    What a band...
If anyone doesn't know the song 'Tongue' I pity them, it will change your life. I am so sorry....for everything I didn't do...

I don't know loads about the same kinda music as you guys
I mostly listen to jazz or old rock but if your lookin for the best indie/rock of the year(not that I consider any of these rock)
then I'd have to go for:

    rodrigo and gabriella's new album
    Coldplay's new album and
    David grays new album
and as an after thought foo fighters- all my life

I know I listed albums not singles, that's coz I don't have the brain power to remember the names of singles or albums, just artists. And I know I'll get alot of stick for my choise but there you go.:D  :(:)
