Just got the iso's for mandrake 9.0 and wondering if anyones installed it yet. Any problems to worry about? Better/Worse? I've 7.2 so it should be good improvement?

did you verify the iso's were ok. I had problems with 8.0 before?

I've Mandrake 8.2 which is a huge improvement over the pre-8 series, so I'm sure version 9 must be better still.

Installed it today, no problems at all. Had to manually install my modem driver after the install because it isn't recognised by the installer (its an Intel HAM based card).

That said, the comp is pretty new (last easter) and unremarkable in terms of spec, so I'd have been upset if it didn't work ;)

It looks MUCH better than 8.2, IMHO

Yeah. I put it on last night. Very impressed. Coming from 7.2 so bit of a difference. I've one problem though regarding the mouse. I have a W2k box and the linux box on a data transfer switch. With 7.2 I could switch between them with no problems. Now if I switch from the linux box to W2k and back I lose the mouse which is a bit annoying. Have to play around a bit more with it but overall its a big thumbs up.

What's the default UI in Mandrake?

You select it during install, or you can install a few during install if it's a shared PC and one user prefers KDE while another prefers Gnome or whatever. IIRC it's set to install KDE and Gnome by default (then you choose each individual user's default interface).

Used to be... back in the 'day', that Mandrake installed that KDE thingy for the "default user".

God bless fluxbox, WindowMaker, Slackware and Gentoo.

*I think this calls for one of these

You can choose either in Red Hat if you install both too, but Gnome is the one that's selected automatically, i.e. if I install both, X will start Gnome unless I specifically tell it to start KDE. So if I install both in Mandrake, which one will be selected automatically?

I ask because I don't like the fact that Red Hat has gone down the Gnome route - KDE runs substantially slower with Bluecurve on my rig, which is new - and I'm really quite pissed off that they took Konq out of the distro. If KDE is the default in Mandrake, well...

PS. Gnome sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls.

Under 8.2, both Gnome & KDE (2 in 8.2) are installed by default. KDE is used by default if you hit cancel at the user setup. You can decide to simply not install one or the other during the installation. I can't imagine they'll have changed this in version 9. If you're a KDE user (which I am, and enthusiastically so) then Mandrake is the god of distros, imho.

Guess what'll be downloading to my workstation this weekend?

By the way, I'd just like to clarify that Gnome running Bluecurve is absolutely stunning, and I can't fault Red Hat for deciding to take the route of least resistance. I just wish they'd decided to do it with KDE. Gnome always struck me as a precursor to Windows XP, it's like an OS for Noddy. Don't even get me started on Nautilus...

KDE will be the default automagic desktop.
