I might be going to Berlin later on this month.

Anyone been/have any impressions of the city?

i've been to berlin 3 times (only 2 days the last time but still good).

its cheap to eat and drink. public transport is superb - 1 ticket does the u-bahn/s-bahn/tram/bus and getting around is simplicity itself.
the nightlife in berlin is amazing.
locals always wait for the green man before crossing the road.
try a doner kebab form a street vendor, they're well tasty.

I was there this summer on the way to Prague. My brother lives there and we stayed with him in Kreuzberg. I really really liked the city. There's so many natural reminders of its history and I appreciated the way it's so authentic. I mean, there are stories to be told about every square inch of the city, if you know what I mean. Cue little anecdote: on our last evening there, we were on our way for a drink in the other side of the city and my brother said "just go down this way for a second" so we followed him to a large dusty field and went in the gate and walked across a bit. He pointed at the ground and said, "it's just around here where Hitler's body was dragged out of his bunker and cremated". There was no one around; there were no neon signs saying Hitler woz ere y'know? We shivered a little let me tell you. I thought it was pretty funky though.

It's clean, I had no problems with the people, I only knew a little German but you manage with English (which I really hate saying because it's so godamn ignorant but it's reality), the public transport is just top-notch and (while I don't condone it) you can get away with never paying on any trains, buses or trams. My brother said he has noticed that inspectors often do the rounds on the first few days of the month and then feck off for the rest of the time.

If you do nothing else, go to the Checkpoint Charlie museum. It's amazing - they have cars which people used to smuggle others across the city when the wall was there. it's incredible the lengths people went to!

Anyway, don't worry that you won't enjoy yourself because you will.
