You only need the first three discs, a mere 2GB and change. Barely a week's downloading on a modem.

If you're a newbie you might find Mandrake a bit easier. It's on version 9 (for downloading) now, but the 8 series is still pretty up to date.

I use RH 8.0 at home and quite a bit at work and I think its great. It's very noob friendly (about as noob friendly as linux can get I think) so I would recommend that if you havn't used linux before. AND it comes with openoffice :) but that being said, anything 7.0 onwards is good.

The best source of (almost free) linux is magazine covers (unless you've got some nice fast net access). I havn't seen any magazine with it yet (it is three discs after all).

Isn't there a forum (on boards) where if u ask nicely someone will burn a distro and mail it to you? anyone?

You have to pass a spelling and grammar test to get RH8.

Failing that, just use any distro you'd get on PC Plus or any of the Linux mags (the names escape me) you can get in Easons. Most distros are as easy to install as RH.

I've all five ISO's downloaded, hoping to get access to the CDRW drive in work to burn them out later in the week, once I have that I'll do copies for anyone who wants them (either for a nominal fee to cover my costs or you do all the leg work...)

    PM me if you're interested....

    Cheers,

Just remember it is a RedHat "point zero" release.

    They're never perfect.

Ditto. Anyone in the Limerick area who wants it (doubt there'll be 100s) give me a shout and I'll sort you out.

just wondering how do you go about having your PC boot up in a different OS .... do you need a certain program ? or does it happen automatically when you install a 2nd one over the 1st one. say i wanted to boot in either NT or Sun OS. Do i make a partition first , then install it or is it the other way around ?

    with red hat 8 ,

you get LILO (lLInux LOader) and grub

they will partition your hard drive automaically for you and install a boot loader,

so you can set the pc to turn on and if a choice of os isn't chosen say xp/red hat 8 in a few seconds it will boot to whatever one you set as default,

    :D

Disk Druid and fdisk do the partitioning, grub and lilo handle the bootloaders. Not that I'm anal or anything.

Oh, and TruckledUncivil, this is a web forum, not a phone. Not typing the words out here is just plain lazy.
