From http://home.eircom.net/news/Breaking/ - they provide a very good free news service and I would recommend it. Here is a really good story. (That bit was to annoy the Unison copyright solicitors - guys say "Hi" to Brian in the Tax Dept.)

Playing judge and jury would be too much of a trial

A LEADING criminal judge was stunned when he received notice to appear for jury service in a criminal case.

Judge Joseph Matthews related his experience when dealing with a road traffic appeal in the Circuit Court, in which the appellant claimed his case would never have come to court had certain documents not gone to the wrong person.

Allowing the motorist's appeal, Judge Matthews said such things did occur.

He himself had received a document summoning him to appear for jury service in the Central Criminal Court.

When he contacted the courts service he was told he was "not the only one" and that the County Registrar had been similarly summoned. "Naturally I was excused," he said.

A spokesperson for the Courts Service said yesterday the mistake was probably due to problems with a new computer system.
Note to self - return jury service notice
