Maybe McCarthy Should Stay On...

Here's a thought, rather than everyone praying that the FAI do the right thing and give McCarthy the order of the boot, would'nt it be better to let Mick preside over the failure to qualify for 2004, resign after it becomes mathamatically impossible to qualify and then give a next manager a clean slate to begin with, rather than to have the new manager trying to make the best of a bad job and perhaps suffering for it.

yeah but the main reason the FAI would get rid of McCarthy at this stage is to get roy keane back in, and if he's ever going to be in another major competition, its going to be the euro. I doubt he'll be still with Ireland for the next World Cup.

Plus, if the new manager took over now he would have time to ease into the job, qualification or no qualification. Then he'd be fully ready when the World Cup qualifiers start.

Weren't the English saying the same thing about Keegan. But then along comes Sven and they end up qulifying for the world cup after all. It was apoor start to the group but if we get ourselves together it is still possible to qualify. If we get another manager in and gather our best players I think we should still do it. I do think it is a bit sad the amount of flak Mick is getting now, but I also think it is ti,e fopr him to go now.

He should go but I don't think Toshack should take over.

They're practically there at the moment, although one more competitive loss should put the final nail in that particular coffin.

I disagree bard. The swiss and Russians still have to play each other twice, and we still have to play each of them once. They will both drop points as neither team are that good, we just have to get the maximum from here on in. I know we have made things difficult for ourselves but I do not think we should be too defeatist about it.

Er yes... that means that (as I said) we can't afford another competitive defeat.

You also said we are practically there at the moment, that is what I disagree with. I think both the other teams will definitely drop points, and second in the group is definitely still up for grabs possibly even first depending on how the Russians and the swiss perform against each other.
