I tried cutting down many a time. I usually end up going over my limit again though.

I have also even tried giving it up totally. I ended up being out one night with a few mates, having been on the dry for over 4 weeks, and said ah f**k it I'll have one or two anyway. This led to many and I ended up getting smashed, and was dying of a serious hangover the next morning.

I say good luck trying, ya'll need it.

I think if most of your friends and work-mates go out to the pub a few times a week and every weekend, you're screwed. :) Mine don't so I rarely drink - I'd say 2 evenings per month is my average..

I've switched to soft drinks in pubs - pints of blackcurrant / etc.

you might get a few funny looks from barmen form time to time, but apart from leaving the pub pissed i haven't found any difference from a normal night out.

The crazy thing is that, in terms of profit margin for the publican, the markup is *much* higher on soft drinks - expecially diluted orange and soforth

Yeah that's the thing. It's more expensive to drink soft drinks in a pub.
    Good luck anyway.
Like Dr Teeth, I dont drink all that much so if I said I was gonna give it up it would mean nothing. I could quite easily never drink again if I wanted to.

I give up the drink for a month every 12-18 months, really just to be sure tha I can!

The first week is hard, mainly because the habit in the pub is to have a pint of Carlsberg, it's automatic.

Some nights are just not the same, most nights pass no differently except that you can hop in the car afterwards and be home in bed in 25mins, as opposed to waiting hours for a taxi to come along and rip you off.

But I think this is all easier in that I set a time limit for mysely, so I know when the drought will be over. The other thing is that I try and have a think ahead to make sure that there's no special events during that month.
