Hi Guys, if anyone is using satellite to download large files like movies etc can you tell me what download speeds you are obtaining or typically a ball park figure on how long it takes to download a feature length movie. Do these files usually use DIVX (MPEG 4 format) or an earlier format. I fitted a dish for someone (sorry cant remember who) who got really good quality video using this method.

    Thanks Tony

The movies are typically 2 mpeg files of 600meg each for *ahem* newer movies , DVD rips are divx and about 700mb.

Euorpeonlines skybooster service was great untill they moved everthing onto one transponder, i was getting speeds of 122k/sec so it would take on average 3 to 4 hours to download both disks but now the spped is more like 20-40k/sec so it can take 5 hours per disk

Netsystem is also fairly slow , rarely goes above 30k

    Hope that helped

Thanks, your email is hidden on the boards , I understand you might not want to publish it here so perhaps you could send a blank mail to tony@satellite.ie

    Thanks

The Casablanca (really free research project) is 1874k bit/s usually. But "they" decide what is being downloaded to the Casablanc cache. You decide if you want to view it.
They usually download about 45 newsgroups, Columbia TriStar trailers, 35 or so websites and a bunch of applications "Top Downloads" category.

If soemone with ADSL puts huge file in the Satonce newsgroup then when the send the newsgroups it is on your PC.

I wish they had a Schedule so as I knew the best time to "tune in" for Scientific American, CNN, DVD reviews and Newsgroups...

The speeds depend on the service in question and the source of the files. E.g. if you've got a 1MBit connection (e.g. my Aramiska one), and the source has little traffic, or plenty of spare capacity, then you will get around 100KB/sec. Get a 2MBit connection, and you can get over 200KB/sec, and so on. :) Some films may be VCDS/SVCD, or DIVX. (S)VCDS are popular as people can view them on most normal dvd players.

    Tony,
Divx is coming in the next set of players. See link:
    http://www.kiss-technology.com/news/content.asp?id=46

You can convert a Divx .avi file to VCD fairly easily with free software. The result will usually be two CDs, and the quality is not quite up to what divx can give. But you can view them on current DVD players.
