    O2 delays multimedia messaging launch
    By Jamie Smyth

O2 has delayed the official introduction of its multimedia messaging service to iron out some glitches in its systems, the mobile phone company said yesterday.

The firm, which has more than one million subscribers in the Republic, confirmed yesterday it had put back its official launch until mid-November.

Multimedia messaging enables mobile phone users to send photographs, cartoons and sounds to other mobiles. It is being simultaneously introduced with a range of camera phones that enable users to take photographs with mobiles.

Last week Vodafone presented its own multimedia messaging service Vodafone Live in a bid to capture the Christmas market. Its new handsets will be available in the shops from November 7th.

O2 had planned to launch its service this week but delayed it to ensure that its service was working well. A spokeswoman said the firm would rather delay bringing a product to market for a couple of days to ensure there were no bugs.

She said she expected the camera phone handsets to go on sale next week in O2 shops. But an official event will not take place until mid-November. O 2's caution probably reflects the industry's experiences of introducing WAP (wireless application protocol) which was rushed out by mobile firms amid huge hype. It failed to deliver to customer satisfaction.
