Has anybody ever used a monthly European travel pass on their holidays? Do you recommend them or have any advice on them?

Haven't actually used 1 myself but have heard from a few ppl that they worked out pretty well. Sounds like a good idea to me if ur planning on doing alot of traveling.

Have a few friends heading of this year with one so they mustn't be too bad!!:p

Did that interrail thing a long time (11yrs) ago and it was great then. I hear that the ticket these days is quite restrictive and less countries are allowing it now or that it now works only as a kind of a discount card. Still though it was a great holiday.

I regret doing the trip on my own, but this meant that you could go where you liked and not have to consult with someone else where you want to go next. But it can get lonely. If you're on your own on a train sit beside or near fellow 'foreign' tourists - safety in numbers. Though I did share a carriage compartment with this Italian family who were very good to me - fed me and all that.

And don't spend too long in one place. I spent 10 days in Greece - 7 days more than I needed to.

Try to spend you nights traveling, unless that is your passing through a scenic area like the Alps. Gotta see those man in the day.

And money, bring enough of it. If you budgeted X amount, add an extra 40%. The last thing you do is run out of cash with 10 days left? And use a credit card - prepaid that is.

Eat cheap, drink cheap, sleep cheap - in other words be prepared to rough it. Spend little to see more - that's what interrailing is all about
