try Aer lingus for a start :

    Worldwide Rates:
Exclusive to Aer Lingus, this offer will allow you, as a resident of Ireland, to buy one year's comprehensive worldwide travel insurance for only €119.00, or €196.00 including your partner. Rates for persons over 69 years of age are also available.

TAB members may use TAB points to pay for this insurance. Information on the number of points needed can be found in the Spending Points section of this website.

I wont post the massive link to it...

its under services & frequent flyer, left hand menu, 2nd item from bottom.

You will need to make sure that you are insured for any countries you are visiting, some countries are excluded, and if you are doing any trekking, you may need additional and specific air rescue cover. In many asian countries the rescue services will not come out unless they have seen the insurance cover or get cash.... (may be different now, but this was the case in Napal some years ago...)

What countries are you hoping to visit?

    PS.

Try the golden pages - Travel insurance - agents - p1107 companies 1120... let your fingers do the walking.

Afaik, you dont have to be a tab member, (an air miles loyalty scheme for flying aerlingus) or have booked your flight with them to use their insurance service... give em a call anyway might save you 100 euros...

Thats a nice bit of traveling, bring lots of film with you. When I grow up and make a fortune, I hope to get to see and experience some of the sights you are heading to.

Before you book check that whichever one you get is the best you can.
if your travelling there for 6 months 100 quid more could be the best money
you ever spend in your life.
Trailfinders does cost more over all but it's better that most that you will get.
Check what they pay for if ie: air-ambulance, what type of hospital stays.
when i was in china last year a other traveller a girl, got sick in a small town in
western china, it was her appendix I think, and they had to do it at the local military base.

Check that the yearlong travel is not just for as many trips in a year and not a full year of travel. i.e. some will not let you travel for more than 30 days at a time before having to come home.
if your under 26 then you can check out usit they do some good deals for half and full year travel insurance.

I was in china and vietnam for just over 6 weeks and went with
trailfinders did not need it after all. but I think it's one of the better
travel insurance for people backpacking and going places outside
    the standard travel locations

even in the EU i know a friend who did not have travel insurance and after a accident did not get the treatment needed in the local hospital for 3 days and not then till they went to a private hospital
and were talking about surgery on there back

The Aer Lingus policy and most standard travel policies don't cover backpacking. They tend to have limits like 30 days per trip & 90 days travel in the entire year. You'll need to get specific backpacker insurance.
