New 'Top Gear' Series Snubbed by BBC2NI

Remember last year when the new 'Top Gear' series returned on Thursday nights, and BBC2 NI replaced it with some local programming?

Well a new hour-long series started tonight on BBC2, from 8-9pm. I tuned in to see it, and wouldn't you know it, a REPEAT of The John Daly Show.

Are these programmers in the real world? Why do they continually hijack primetime programmes.

I'd love to see their viewing figures.

Daniel O'Donnell's new prime-time chat-show on Friday nights is pulling in less than 50,000 viewers, according to last week's papers.

I noticed that the continuity announcer was from NI on the NTL feed.

It had the john daly show on satellite and the Top Gear through NTL.

What genius came up with that? A double helping of John Daly is not how I like to end my week!!

Great, they didn't even learn from the "Beechy" versus "The Office" fiasco. Mind you, common sense appeared to prevail in that case. It's ludicrous to replace a popular programe with a repeat!! NTL must be laughing their heads off. The same thing will no doubt happen if and when UTV and or Channel 4 end up on Sky, and it won't be Sky's fault.

What you have to remember is that the target audience for these programmes - the Northern Ireland viewing public - will have a choice of programmes. They have BBC TWO NI on #102, but also BBC TWO in the 900s. So they would have been able to watch Top Gear if they wish.

Same goes for NTL viewers - we have BBC TWO NI on #106, but BBC TWO with Top Gear on analogue.

So its only ROI DSat viewers who are being inconvienced. The BBC would say that its the Northern Ireland licence fee payers its serving, not ROI customers.

As we are paying for this service we should not settle for an inferior product. If it were a toaster I would bring it back and get one that worked.

How many sky subscribers are there in ROI? If we could orangise a email/post campaign maybe we could make a difference.

No wonder there are so many FTV cards in use!

Actually, what you're paying for is BBC1 and BBC2 NI and that is what you're getting.

All i can say is that this FTV card is worth it!
( if you didn't catch top gear we found out that if you drive at 177mph past a speed camera it can't see you!!!)

Is it going to be repeated?

Pity RTE or TV3 don't buy Irish rights for the programme. Would be better than some of the other imported crap they buy.

Dont think we were ever asked if we would like to receive normal BBC2 or a watered down version. BBC2 NI was forced upon us!

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Why on earth would you be asked, The BBC is a UK broadcaster broadcasting to the UK.

BBC NI negotiated the rights issues to get their services on Dsat for the ROI audience, therefore you get BBC1 and BBC2 NI.
Really, were the same rule of thumb applied to the ROI as it is to the rest of Europe, Prime and World would be the only services on Dsat available to the ROI.

Well we was part of UK till 1922
    Commonwealth till 1948
Anyone in ROI with Parents or Granparents born any place in Ireland before 1922, or in UK after 1922 is British. (till a few months ago). Recently they decided that Anyone in ROI with Parents or Granparents born any place in Ireland before 1948, or in UK after 1948 is British.

For about ten years Irish people only watched BBC (RTE hadn't started).
A high proportion of Irish viewers can get BBC with an ordinary TV and Aerial (maybe a big aerial on a big pole).

We buy a majority of product imported from or via UK.

What more do UK broadcasters want? :D

(Of course Gibralter is all British too, though the UK gov would love to give it to Spain, and they arn't supposed to have Sky at all).

quite a lot of Irish have grandparents born before 1948 (my parents were born in 1949), are you trying to say that most of us are british? i think not

What watty is saying is that if your parents or grandparents were born before 1948 in the RoI, we can get British citizenship (and passports)

Careful guys, remember what happened to the last lad from the North to bring up politics....... :(

And what on earth has all that got to do with broadcasting rights ?
After all we all had loads of other broadcasters on Analogue Astra, are you going to start lobbying Sky to carry them on Sky Digi "because we used to be able to get them" ????
