wingate is crap for this job in my experience..

might just go with a router yet ?

    Life's much easier with a reasonably-decent router

You have a few choices, if your ISDN TA is external, you might consider openbsd with NAT, it's very very easy to setup and could also be a testing ground to learn more. If you don't want to do this you may want to look at a 3com office connect, they can do general ISDN crap and you also have a choice to do NAT.

The most useful case for the basic NAT service it provides is default-send to whatever machine, so if you have a static IP and you rely on ETRN'ing etc....

They are also pretty reliable, I've never installed one and had to come back to it.

    1. You have BRI ISDN I expect the cisco to do same.
    2. Upgrade path, you should be able to geta module for €150-200 which will allow an upgrade to ADSL or Cable ....both seem to rely on an ethernet connection with PPPoE protocol. Cisco support the Alcatel DSL kit that Eircom uses on their DSL as it happens.

Cisco kit remains serviceable for years as does 3Com. Some of the nonames are not as straightforward....once off the market they are virtually non-serviceable.

If you're staying with ISDN try the Cisco 761M.

hi there why dont you just go with a cisco router and broadband? isnt dialup internet expensive?
for the price you are paying for isdn line rental (not to mention calls) you would get a 2mb DSL connection from BT or eircom.

a cisco 837/soho97 router is perfect , has ethernet, 4 switch ports DSL port
built in firewall and can support VPN,

there are some for sale on ebay at good prices, they retail at 600 euros plus!

saw one on ebay for 160 euro!
