I thought Halloween was thier opening night? Maybe thats wishful thinking! My memories of TV3s early days are largely confined to two events - The channels first dreadful coverage of the Republic of Ireland away games (truely wretched!) and the shock of Martin Kings weather forcasts! I just want the weather forcast when I watch a weather forcast...

The good ol' web archive gives me a snap-shot of my old mucker, Richie Logue's site and schedule of what was on TV3 when it launched, 20th Spetember 1998.

    http://web.archive.org/web/19990208210227/www.users.zetnet.co.uk/rlogue/news.html

Richie's main site is now at www.irish-tv.com

As really bad a launch of a channel as there can be. TnaG's launch was better. Far better than this effort.

Three is a magic Number Yes it is its a magic number. The started of with this the finished with this they continue to do so every morning and at night. And yes they won an award for it.

They introduced us to Hector (Amu...) (The mad bloke on TG4) and Clough (who is also now working for TG4).

They had mice introducing us to all of the presenters on TV3. Martin King, Grainne Seoige, Alan Cantwell and of course TV3's entertainment news corospondent Lorrine Keane.

TG4 opened on holloween and had some craic.

The opening minutes.... as reviewed on tape.

Some Schoolhouse Rock, "Three is the magic number".... (prefer Embrace's version, TBH)
    ...
Liberty Bell March (otherwise known as the Monty Python theme)
    ....
Zooming in from space on a semi in Tallaght.

It hasn't picked up in 4 years since.

That's taken from De La Soul's first album (3 Feet High and Rising). That being said, De La Soul probably sampled it from somewhere else.

Its not the De La Soul version. Its the original version that unfortunatly escapes me at the minute.

I did some work on that piece. Its nice to see something you've done on tv every night, no matter how sick you get of it:)

Yeah, you're quite right, Merlin was on at some stage of its opening night.

I remember the tests before launch with a small window showing promos of upcoming programming like Eastenders, Pop on 3 (which wasn't too bad tho the name was crap), Pepsi Chart Show, etc.

And its seems to have missed everyone :D I mentioned it in my last post. Its from that educational beat-combo School House Rock.

It was a half-decent music show, the presenter was knowledgable. Pity it was dropped, it's not as if there are any decent music programmes left on Irish TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,005 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

They are a bit confused over at TV3. They are always advertising some programme called Corrie, but every time it is meant to be on Coronation Street comes on instead. Then on a Sunday they talk about it being the last episode of the week, when it is actually Friday's one, and Monday's first episode is called the first episode of the week, when that is actually the one shown on Sunday. They really are mixed up. They don't know the name of the programmes they are showing or what day the week starts.

Imagine there is only one irish tv station that provides a run down of the top 40 chart.

Only one channel that has a pop music programme.

MMMMM do you want to guess the name of that station????????

Oh and RTE TWO have schedule the new series "songs from another room" at a very appropiate time, when every one is asleep.

Yes it is surprising to say that TV3 aren't even producing as many shows as the where when they started. I mean it wasn't like they had many in the first place.

Oddly when they started they only had 3% of the viewers and yet now they have 15%.
some old King arthur or something

    MERLIN
Nah.. I think TG4 (or TnaG) launched on Halloween night.

    RTE One = 31.12.1961
RTE Two = 02.11.1978 (Some odd date like that)
    TG4 = 31.10.1996
    TV3 = 20.09.1998

TV3 was launched at 5.30 on September the 20th 1998. The first segment aired was a programme(If ya can call it that!! ) Called "This is TV3" - It was terrible, it was trying to show people around behind the scenes of tv3 and introduce everyone to the new faces...unfortunatly it only made people turn off as it was terrible.!!

Then the "3 is the magic number" graphic sequence was aired. It was brilliant and in my opinion still is today. It not only won European Best Graphic sequence on tv in prague, but went on to win more awards in the states for its content.

Then at 6pm TV3 put out their first news broadcast. Grainne seoige and Alan cantwell presented, with Martin King doing weather and Trevor Welsch doing sports. The First package aired was by Ray kennedy(Now with Sky) about the Big Issue and how its bosses were pocketing money! Full of useless info i am!hah

As for Where has Gimme 3 gone anyway, and Pop On 3, Screen 3, Game Of Two Halves, 20/20, Daytrippers, Messrs Tylak And Rooney, The Sound Roon, Dynamite TV etc...

"Gimme 3" was fighting a losing battle with The Den, there was crap cartoons, they were all prerecorded over 3 weeks for the whole year and the decision was made to re-aim for their original target market audience of 16-35 yr olds and put on soaps and reality progs.

"Pop on 3" was replaced by "the sound room" and then that was axed because Darragh the presenter decided to leave to progress on his written Journalism and family(Yes i know Disco Stu, even though he was Camp, He Is Married!!) Dynamite tv was costing too much to air for copyright reasons and the 3 programmes were produced externally by "Old Hat Productions" Which still do Popcorn to date.

    "Game of 2 halves"...HA Rubbish

"20/20" was replaced by "Agenda" and now by "The political party"

Daytrippers was a one off series from Waddell Productions in the UK and was very good but, Very hard to do any more series as it outgrew its lifespan

And finally...Mssrs Tylak and Rooney. Possibly the worst comedy series ever to air on any station in Europe over the past 10 years. Its ratings were so bad that even the Tape machines wouldnt play it!!

So ya see a lot of the programmes are still there but just renamed, and the ones that were just too crap were sent to TV Heaven, or top shelf in Prog library in Ballymount.

There are rumours of a new Music programme coming on soon, and also the Nightime Text request Programme 3 Cubed (Dont know new name yet) will be returning in winter.

This sequence has a spelling mistake in it that still irks me every time I see it - have a look out for it next time. When I think of the number of times it must have broadcast with that error now... Not sure if it's the best graphics sequence ever - RTÉ did some finer stuff for Eurovisions past - but it was decent for its day.

    I thought it was excellent.

So far the only good thing from TV3.

Suppose I could always take a look at Ireland AM you never know I might be surprised.

(Okay I will give them adgenda).

Anyone remember the animation sequence that TnaG did just before it changed to TG4. It was a Caterpillar, turning into a Butterfly. That too was excellent.

Yeah! I like the opening graphics to the Eurovision hosted by Carrie Crowley.

Nah, he was trying to be like Toby Amies from MTV's Alternative Nation.

As for the song Three is a Magic Number, the name of the group escapes me right now but I have it on some Bluenote CD so I'll check it later

No, it's definitely a mistake. When the song lyric goes, "You don't have to guess," it comes up on the screen as, "You dont have to guess" (no apostrophe) which is a pretty obvious error in my book, especially when you're going to broadcast it at the start and end of every day. I think I read somewhere (in relation to its award win) that a company called Dynamo in Dublin did that graphic sequence.

Weird how BBC3 used exactly the same song for its launch.

Compared to TV3's idents, though, I have to say I prefer those weird little orange creatures on BBC3; can be pretty funny. My favourite is the Betty & Barney Hill one.
