Can a gas giant become a star?

A star, afaik is a big ball of burning gas, so can a gas giant somehow become ignited?

Well, afaik, the theory is that stars are formed in pretty much exactly that way, except that the Gas Giant would be far larger than something like good ol' Jupiter.

well one thing you might want to know, a star doesn't 'burn' persay, no oxygen involved....fission reactions create the heat. and as such you would need alot more mass than jupiter for a star and something to start the chain reaction and alot of hydrogen(i'm not sure how much is in jupiter...)

    Slight correction...its fusion, not fission.
I mean - you cant really split hydrogen :)

I saw the last 20 mins, ah such optimism. Anyway Juptier could not become a star as its too small it would need to be about 80 times the mass!, but its got the right mix of elements.
