Why dont the government just put up wind farms all around the country? We are starting to import wind energy from Scotland. If we heavily invested in wind farms we could also export to other countries that are looking for green energy to ratify Kyoto. I think green energy is a potentially massive industry and we have the resourses to avail of it and potentially make a hell of a lot of money out of it.

Ireland is building the largest offshore Windfarm in the world, Denmark the second largest. I hope this demonstrates Ireland's commitment to renewable forms of energy and it's continued comittment to leading the world in spearheading renewable energy projects.

Considering the amount of space Ireland has where it might develop off shore wind farms, I would support a massive undertaking to exploit this natural resource so that Ireland could ultimately sell some energy back to the likes of Scotland,Wales and England.

    Damn typos

    God I hope not! ;)

There is also a plan for a major farm off Carnsore Point Co Wexford,
    I belive.

Also today Peter Hain UK minister, talked about reducing the reliance on fossil fuels for both environmental and security
reasons. Maybe all this international tension will have a silver lining in the long run.

Carnsore Point is built and being connected to the grid at the moment.

There are also plans for the Arklow Bank, Bray Head and the Kish Bank, IIRC.

They built 7, I think it was, as a proof of concept, but according to someone I know who works as in independent consultant on such things, they were having problems with one of the pylons' foundations, causing it to lean slightly. I've not spoken to him for a bit so I don't know what the current status is.

That was the Arklow Bank, wasn't it? Is that the same project as the Codling Bank?

Oops, yes ... you're right. I just saw "off the wicklow coast" and assumed it was the same one.

Ireland could do with a few dozen Codling Bank type wind parks, with matching grid connectivity to mainland Europe. The country has more than its share of green energy resources, and it is only right that it shares them with the rest of Europe (aside from Brussels!). Energy availability, reliability and price will be the number 1 key competitive factor for a country over the next 30 years. A big export earner and a key driver in the location of energy intensive investment projects in Ireland.

The proposed grid connection from Ireland to Wales is alarming in its modesty and scale. And questionable in energy engineering logic given Britain’s plans to generate around 30% of its electrical energy from wind. Because there is only a few hours difference between high wind levels in Ireland and Britain. As a result there will be either a feast or a famine of wind energy in Ireland and Britain at any point in time. The key to green energy is diversity. This is critical for an economic return for green energy producers, as well as the consumer who is depending on a reliable and consistent supply.
