With the economic meltdown continuing apace in Argentina the decendants of Irish who settled in the pampas are looking for a change in the law to allow them to live in Ireland (and by implication the rest of the EU).

Should they get thier wishes as part of the "diasporia" or is it a blatent attempt to leave a sinking ship and live off the Irish tax-payers backs? (just like them other foreign types ;) ).

I reckon they should be told politly to fix thier own boat.

    Mike.

Interesting that they want to come home now. They didn't try to come home during 1945-55, after 1955 or after 1978. And the situation was much worse during these periods.

They're no more or less special than the Irish diaspora in the US or anywhere else.

Do we get Chris deBurgh's relations too? Could do without another crooner TBH.

On the plus side, there w'd be the tango. This dance if mixed with the traditional stuff sh'd prove an interesting hybrid.

On the negitive side, do we want an ethic group that blames all it's problems on the English holding on to a piece of their "historical" territory.

I saw a news item where the italian government were considering it or else actualy doing it. If the italians can manage it why not us, although i betg theyd go back to argentina if they say the state of this place.

If we can allow in economic migrants from Romania and NIgeria, I can't see why we shouldn't offer the same refuge to people with surnames such as O'Neill or O'Reilly!

They are not Irish citizens and dont deserve to be treated any differently than any other imigrents looking to enter the country.

The Italians might be giving this serious thought as a-
many Argentinians are of Italian extraction and b- they have a looming demographic crisis, with Europes lowest
birth-rate. Now it seems to me they could just natralise
suitible north africans and "easties" but for "some" reason they won't.

    Hi,

also the argentines are good at soccer if a few of them played for ireland we might progress further than the last 16 of the world cup. Better than leaving in other "immigrants" that sponge of our country.

Although they're not Irish citizens technically i wouldn't have any qualms about them coming back

Some might be eligible for citizenship under the grandfather rule, but may not know.

C'mon, wouldn't be much different to the Yanks living here under the Grandfather rule. Hehe, can just imagine in a few decades time - RTÉ1, Network 2, TV3, TG4, Canal 5 Espanol, RTE Romania.

Well unlike Irish-Americans these people have retained their Irishness, even if they don't all qualify under the grandfather rule i think an exception can be made.

Or get knocked out by England in the first round.
