I'm in Holland and I'm looking to pull in FM signals from Belgium. I can receive the signals in a decent car radio, except they are inconsistent. It fades from near-perfect reception for a few seconds (RDS text even appears) to mostly fuzz and back again. Does anybody know of a cheap way to improve FM reception? I'm open to suggestions involving coat hangers. :D

I've heard "Yagi" directional antennas are good.

If you are listening in the car there's little you can do to improve reception as nothing can go beyond using the standard car aerial (usually a 40-50cm whip). The listening report sounds like classic long range FM reception that can be helped by favourable conditions.

If you are using the car radio in the home for listening (good car radios are excellent for picking up weak signals) a yagi may indeed help provided that the stations that you want all come from the one direction (within about a 30 degree arc). If that isn't possible then the best suggestion is to get a simple monopole FM aerial, raise it as high as you can and use CT100 cable to the receiver. A small amplifier may also improve matters. Stay away from the 'halo' aerials - these are more than useless.

The station I'm trying to pull in is a 40kW station about 120 kilometres away. The landscape between here and there is as flat as a pancake. I'm not looking to get it in the car, but I have a proper stereo deck tuner in the house that has a "coax" plug. I'll keep my eyes open for a monopole FM aerial. Even if doesn't work, I like buying things like that just to see what they can do. ;)
