First memory

Just curious really, I am. My first memory was when I was about 3 years old and I got my fingers stuck in a gate and my fingernails were pulled off. I think I was 3, I can't really remember that much. I'm not sure if that is old or young for a first memory but I am pretty sure it is my first.

An old school friend claimed he could remember being in his mother's womb! We all actually believed him simply because he was one of those nerdy geeky types that know the square root of PI to the seventy fifth decimal place off the top of his head when he was 15 years old.

    Anyway... what do you remember??

What I remember: My cousin's baptism when I was about 2. My third and fourth birthdays. Wanting a baby sister (age 3). A Mini "Estate" car (complete with timber exterior), that one of my mother's friend's had (age2/3???). Starting school (day after 4th birthday). Not being allowed go Christmas shopping (age 4). Being kidnapped by sister's friend age 5/6.

What I don't remember: kissing girl next door (when we were 2/3).

    memories, memories, so sweat

i remember being fed goo for food in a highchair :)

i also remember staying in my grandmothers house when i was like 2 and my parents were away for a week or so.

I had never walked before and i was in the laneway behind my grandmothers house with her. I was crawling around the place and found being hoisted onto my hind legs by my and being balanced.

Eventually my mom & dad came back and i was again in the laneway. They were 10 feet away so i got myself standing up and walked really slowly over to them in my nappy. They burst into tears at the sight. That was a good 1

Second birthday. I got a squeeky blue hedgehog.

Three or four years old chasing pigeons in Trafalgar square in London. A policeman chastised me and I began to ball crying, in part because he was a big nasty man in a uniform and in part because I couldn’t understand what he was saying (I spoke no English). Poor fellow spent twenty minutes apologising to my mother and trying to calm me down, even offering to let me speak in his radio.

Getting caught at four or five playing doctors and nurses with the girl next door.

My father telling me not to ruin my appetite at the dinner table just before it was served, and my great-grandfather cutting me a piece of parmesan and passing it to me on the sly.

Being asked “How many years old are you?” by a nun in my first school in Ireland translated as “How many ears do you have?” at age seven. Wondering why Irish boys didn’t like playing with girls was another culture shock for me.

trying to copy my dads whistling! I was 3. Ahhhh! :D

    Mike.

Buffybot-Dya mind telling why you had to be circumsised?Just outta curiousity:)
BTW on the same subject is it true that most American babies, including non Jews, are circumsised? Why?
I have flashes of various things.I remember my first day in school fairly well.Twas a real hot day and I remember not wanting to put my bag under the table in case somebody would steal it while i wasnt looking:D
I wasnt crying but I remember some people I know well nowadays crying their eyes out on the first day.

Well, it's either playing with a piece of cardboard and a fire engine behind the sofa, or feeding teddy and I some pills I found and having to go to hospital.

I've been told I swallowed a long screw once, which apparently came out the other end. I believe that only because it has been mentioned by two or three different people in the family, but I'm still not sure how the hell it managed to come out again without cutting my insides to ribbons.

In some males, the end of the foreskin is too small to be retracted, um, conveniently, for various activities such as micturation, masturbation, and just plain washing. I have an Italian friend who had a circumcision at the age of 19 for this very reason -- while he was able to have a good time having it off on his own, he could never retract the foreskin without discomfort, it being too tight, and he found that this interfered in playing with others. So, snip snip and he's quite happy, so he says.

Yes, it is true that at least until very recently American babies are circumcized. Certainly it was true in 1963 when I was born. My nephew was born in 1988 and apparently his parents elected to have it done to him as well. I did protest. I suspect further discussion on this point ought to be in another thread.

Of course, BuffyBot wasn't entirely unambiguous as to what was removed. Blokes have a number of attributes not present in, um, blokettes.

Hmm, My first earliest memory is of me trying to climb onto the wall on our front lawn. It was an effort to prove to my Mom that was Old enough to go to school, as far as I remember. One day I actually managed it...and I ended falling off on the other side and hitting a rock. Still have a scar, just above my right eye.

I blame my parents..letting me climb walls! No supervision whatsover..Godamnit! :p

Being in Croke Park when I was 3. I don't remember who was playing though.

Running into a wall when I was 3. Also wanting to go to school when I was 3. That feeling soon changed

Still got the scar from running into the wall. Got smarties though. They came in boxes back then, not tubes. Aye.

Moving house when i was about 2. I remember the van we moved it, it was a yellow, Hiace. I just remember jumping around in it with my sisters.

My mum holding me as we were dragged back into a boat. Was about 1 and a half apparently. At this point I am not sure if it is memory or a manufactured memory.

I heard the story so many times of how I was dropped out of my mother's arms overboard from a R.I.B and my mum then jumping straight out after me.

But be it imagination or not, I can almost pciture being taken back into the boat etc. ... I am dubious, but I think this may be my most partial first memory - possibly due to the drama of the event.

If it ain't that, it is being in a cot in a small room with a red light and thinking how high the bars were on the cot/cage :)

I doubt you were intellectualising it in those terms..
I'd say you were thinking "waaaah I wanna get out, and I can't!"

being 3 (everyone seems to ahve had their first memory a lot younger than me!) and having my tonsils removes. actually, mayeb i was younger, coz i remember having to get gromits put in my ear when i was about 2 or something. Also having to go to the hospital for various bowel check up's when i was 3 (i had a really gross condition that shouldnt be allowed to happen!) all hospital ones!

i remember watching thriller by michael jackson was i was littleand being obsessed with it, and being in my cousin's house for her birthday, and christmas when i was 4 and got day glo barbie, and starting dancing lessons when i was 3.

what i dont remember is the time my mum answered the door to find some strange woman bringing me home. Apparantly i'd left the house that morning, by myself, and no one noticed i was gone!!!!!

My earliest memory would have to be when i was only a few months old, and I was getting my nappy changed on the kitchen table. I couldnt talk or walk or see properly ( young infants have partially blurred vision ). Wierd. I remember when I was 3 my brother swung a large gate and it hit me in the head. I had to get stitches in hospital. I remember that well.

As far as I know (was a bit too young to make and independent judgement :D) it was because the foreskin was too tight and I couldn't wee properly.

    Happy now :D:D

mine is th day of my 3rd birthday and it's a really vivid memory. we were having a birthday party in my house and a couple of cousins and my siblings were there. I was soo shy then and didn't want to go out to the party so ran into another room and buried my head down the back of a couch. my cousin tried to coax me out but he hadn't much luck. eventually I sat at the table and stared at my lap. I had to keep reaching up and feeling around the plate for something nice because I didn't want to lift my head!

Oh and I got the best present from my aunt - a blue and white dress with minnie mouse on the chest and minnie's skirt was sewn on so you could lift it up and see her knickers.

My aunt was clearly a pimp.

I can't remember anything for the next 15 years.

    age 3
I beat up the boy next door because he had the nerve to borrow my tricycle without my permission

    age 4
first day at school, the nun had to put her back to the door because I was yelling at her that I was going home, when that didn't work, I tried to reason with her by explaining I was just going to check that my coat was ok in the cloakroom..

I was three. We didn't have a car and me and my mum used to do everything together. She needed to buy some material to cover the living room suite, so she walked me to Leixlip (about 3 or 4 miles) in the pram. When we got the material, there was such a huge roll of it that we had to put it in the pram and I had to walk. Aww. I remember conking out on the sofa under the orange rug when we got in, and being woken for red lemonade and smarties later on. :D

Another one would have been the same year when I had the whooping cough, which, if any of you have had it, you'll know makes you vomit.

I puked on my clean clothes, and also on my change of clothes, and had to wander round in my knickers and an old pink jumper. My bloody cousins thought it was hilarious (I'm the youngest in the family) and took photos (bare-assed Claire in 25 different poses), and I'm taunted to this day.

I vividly remember a warm day when i was 2-3ish.
me mam was doing some sort of gardening thing and i was waddling up and down the graden chasing something.
    waddling.........falling flat........waddling........falling flat........waddling........falling flat.......
    and so on.

and i remember watching my brother climb the trees in our garden also around the same age.....

i have a lot of other memories aswell but wouldnt be able to put an age on them or in chronological order tho....

When I was around 2 (I think) I remember telling a neighbour to f-off and getting in loads of trouble for it.......I also remember peeing on a radiator in our house (one of those tired, confused moments) whe I was about 3 :D......and I vividly remember my first day at school. The girl I sat beside is in college with me now! :D

Everything else is pretty much a blur until World Cup '90, except for some standard shudder moments from school...

    :)

It was very dark and warm, I seemed to be floating around. From time to time I would get a taste of something very spicy and give a kick. I remember getting very crowded and I wanted to stretch so I decided to make my way down a narrow hall like for some more room, and I just kept going...it would have been a lot easier with out that damn knapsack that seemed to be attached to me everywhere I went. And finally, I felt cold air and bright lights blinded me, for about 3-5 months after that I didnt see clear..and then out of no where I was slapped! right on me bum! well that was a bit upseeting so I opened my mouth and this funny sound came out...I liked it , so I did it often, I then noticed that when ever I did that I would get somethin yummy to eat, and I would get held...so I did it even more often...oh, those memories
sometimes I wish I could start all over again :p

Breaking my leg in the spokes of my father's bike when I was 2. I don't think it hurt, and my parents say they didn't even know it was broken until later when it swelled and reddened. I also remember going in to get the cast taken off - I was lying on a bed in hospital and I saw one of the doctors take out this pair of shears (they didn't have the circular saw things in them days) like a BIG FUGGIN HUGE pair of scissors. To my momentary relief, he put them back in the press. Then he took out an even BIGGER FUGGIN HUGER pair and started walking over to me as I shrieked like a crazy boy. I think I must have passed out or something, because I don't remember anything after that...

I still have the little tiny cast somewhere.

I can remember lying on my back in a cot or pram or something in a room on my own. I was crying and waving me arms and legs up in the air, I can remember not being able to speak or see too far. A sliding door (which we had in our house at the time) opened and a woman with long dark hair coming in and lifting me up. I stopped crying, I know all I wanted was company. This woman help me on her knee while she chatted to my mother (one of my aunties used to have long dark hair). I was perfectly happy being nursed. Then one of them, I can't remember which one carried me back into the other room and put me back down. I whimpered for a while then I think I must've fallen asleep. The smell you get in a freshly built and plastered house reminds me strongly of that time. We moved to that house when I was just a year old so I'd say I was barely more than that.

I can remember lots of time before I started school. My mother feeding heinz baby food to my brother and giving me every 2nd spoonful and my father coming in in his soldier uniform. Standing in soft mud in a neighbour of my granny's and screaming 'cos I thought I was sinking...dunno what age I was..maybe about 16 or 17:D
