I spotted some cheap wireless gear on www.buy.com and I'm thinkin of investing in a Linksys access point and a few cards.

thats the access point.. either that one or the basic one anyway.

Seeing as I'm completely new to access points (and not that sharp with any 802.11b hardware really) I was wondering how easy it is to use the above AP with an outdoor antenna.. Is it simply a case of removing one of those retro looking rubber aerials and connecting the coax from the outdoor antenna? I presume its just a BNC connector yeah?

Another thing too, where the hell can I get cheap (or reasonably priced) pigtails to use with the pcmcia cards I will eventually end up posessing :D One type of pigtail for all cards or do I have to go to the bother of buying all orinoco or all linksys cards to match my linksys or orinoco pigtails?

Hmmm, havent felt like a newbie for a while, specially where networking is concerned...

Thanks for the help I know you'll be able to provide :)

I think they screw off but i havent seen one (just the box). They should be the standard screw on coax conections (not the same ones u get on net cards). The PCI cards should be the same as well, they have the same rubber antena as the AP.

The linksys cards dont have a pigtail conection :( (i have 2 here using one atm) but linksys cards can become AP's under linux (and work fine as client cards) You could save your self money and set up linux AP uing a linkys PCI card :) (priced em at around €170 and €180 for the PCMCIA)

Orinico/Lucent/Buffalo cards have standard pigtail conectors, have a few of the cards and had a loan of a directional and omni antena, worked great.
