Why not put in a little address bar icon? I just think it looks pretty cool. Not sure what it's for, I think it may just be another shorcut to the homepage

e.g. on the IDER site, you see
    iedr.ico
In the address bar. This is accomplished by putting
    <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="/COMMON/TEMPLATES/iedr_summer/000000/images/iedr.ico">

    In the source header. Simple.

    To see it in action:
    http://www.iedr.ie
    http://www.vodafone.ie

    Good idea?

From what I gather, unless you have IE set right everytime you start it up it will look for an update of every icon which will hit the boards more often. Not that most of you's probably just sit there whacking reload button all the time.

Would that be a Windows standard .ico file?

    Found these instructions:

    Create the Correct Size Icon
For Internet Explorer 5, the required size of a shortcut icon is 16x16 pixels.
To create the icon, use an icon editor, such as the one included in Microsoft
Visual Studio® or one of the many other icon editors available. Regardless
of the program you use, make sure you set the editor to create an icon that
is 16x16 pixels. Otherwise, the icon will be ignored by Internet Explorer.

Associate the Icon with Your Web Page
After creating the icon, you must associate it with your Web page. One way
is to save the icon with the default file name of favicon.ico in the root
directory of your domain—for example, www.microsoft.com/favicon.ico. Each
time your Web page is added to a user's favorites, Internet Explorer automatically
searches for this file and places the icon next to all the favorites and quick links
    originating from your site.

    www.favicon.com

    --

I've put one on the recent sites I've written as well as on my own site...

doesn't seem to appear though until you add the site to your favourites... well - for me anyway..

BTW, it can be a 48x48 pixel icon as far as I know. IE should scale it down. (So any of the boards avatars converted to an .ico file would do the job ;) )

For boards.ie, how about an Irish flag?
